Lobster Roll Quest 2023!

Heading back east in early September, we arrive in Boston late on 9/9 and will hit the road for LOBSTERS early Sunday morning. Planning to get to Red's Eats by 11 for their 11;30 opening, from there our lobster card is wide open. Probably going to McLoon's after Red's. We've never been further north on a Quest than that, what else might we find up there? I think Bar Harbor would be too far. Bucksport looks like as far North as we might be willing to go.

We are ending that night in Bath or Brunswick, so we can get a bit further north than we usually do, then on Monday morning we head back to Boston, so it's really a one day Quest.

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like an amazing lobster roll adventure you have planned! Maine is known for its incredible lobster rolls, and you're hitting some iconic spots. Starting at Red's Eats and McLoon’s is a great way to kick off your lobster roll quest. You’re right that Bar Harbor might be a bit far for your timeframe, but there are still plenty of fantastic stops you can make between Red's Eats and Brunswick/Bath without going too far north.

Here's a suggested route and some additional lobster roll spots to consider while staying within your time and distance limits:

  • Red's Eats (Wiscasset) – You’ve got this one on your list already, and it’s definitely a must-visit! Known for its generously sized lobster rolls, Red's has been a staple of Maine’s lobster roll scene for decades. Try to get there early, as the line can get long by opening time.
  • McLoon’s Lobster Shack (South Thomaston) – After Red's, McLoon’s is a great follow-up. The view from McLoon’s is beautiful, with its outdoor seating overlooking the water, and their lobster rolls are known for being fresh and perfectly dressed. It’s a bit more low-key than Red’s but still a top contender.
  • Claws (Rockport) – Just a short detour from McLoon’s, Claws in Rockport is a small, local gem serving up amazing lobster rolls. It's a great stop if you want to experience a more intimate setting with top-quality lobster. If you're in the area, it's worth the visit.
  • Shannon's Unshelled (Rockport) – Another great choice in the Rockport area, Shannon’s has a relaxed vibe with excellent lobster rolls. They use fresh lobster, and the seasoning is spot on. The prices are reasonable, too, making it a perfect stop for a quick bite.
  • Ralph's (Kennebunkport) – If you’re near Kennebunkport, Ralph’s offers fantastic lobster rolls. It’s a bit off the main road but definitely worth seeking out. Known for both its classic lobster rolls and a buttery roll that’s just the right level of indulgent.
  • The Lobster Shack (Cape Elizabeth) – On your way south again, The Lobster Shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth is a classic Maine spot, offering a great lobster roll with ocean views. It's one of the more iconic lobster shacks, so if you have time on the way back, it’s worth a stop.

If you're heading back down to Boston, you could also stop by Ports of Italy in Brunswick, which serves up a fantastic lobster roll if you're craving something after your full day of tastings.

As for your lodging, both Bath and Brunswick are charming towns with lots of local flavor. Bath, in particular, is known for its maritime history, and you might enjoy a stroll along the waterfront after your lobster-filled day. Brunswick has more of a university town vibe, with plenty of good restaurants and local shops to explore. Both are great spots to spend the night and recharge before heading back to Boston on Monday morning.

Overall, you’re in for a delicious day! Maine’s lobster rolls vary in style, but the common denominator is always fresh lobster. From the creamy mayo-based rolls to those that are simply buttered, each stop on your quest will offer a unique experience. Enjoy the adventure, and don’t forget to save room for dessert, whether it’s a whoopie pie or a Maine blueberry pie to round out your day!
