Savannah - Must Sees and Dos

Hi all

I am a single female travelling to Savannah in October from the UK without a car. I realise there is a ton of info on here and much to do and see - I'll have 2 full days and 3 evenings and am just wondering what I should aim to definitely not miss. Mainly I am wondering about excursions out of town - e.g. Tybee Island, Wormsloe. But wondering if really I should focus on all there is to do in Savannah itself, given I don't have a massive amount of time. Any thoughts on this? Any eating, drinking, tour recommendations and other tips and advice would be very welcome :) Thanks, Helen x

Hi Helen,

With 2 full days and 3 evenings in Savannah without a car, you can still see a lot of the city by focusing on walkable areas, guided tours, and a few short rideshare trips. Savannah has a compact historic district, which is great for exploring on foot.

Must-See Sights in Savannah

  • Forsyth Park: A beautiful central park perfect for a morning or afternoon stroll. Don’t miss the iconic fountain and shaded walking paths.
  • Historic Squares: Savannah has 22 historic squares scattered throughout the district. Each has its own charm, statues, and landscaping. Walking between them is a great way to soak in the architecture.
  • River Street: Lively area along the Savannah River with shops, restaurants, and views of the working port. Ideal for dining or grabbing souvenirs.
  • Cathedral of St. John the Baptist: Stunning architecture and interior worth a visit if you appreciate historic churches.
  • City Market: Central hub for galleries, shops, and casual dining.

Optional Excursions

  • Tybee Island: About 20–25 minutes by rideshare from downtown. Great if you want a beach visit. It can be done in a half-day trip.
  • Wormsloe Historic Site: Famous for its scenic oak-lined avenue. Rideshare or tour is needed since it’s slightly outside the city, but it’s a short visit that gives iconic photos and history.
  • Savannah Ghost Tour: Evening walking tours through the historic district, combining history with a spooky twist.

Eating and Drinking Recommendations

  • Breakfast/Brunch: The Collins Quarter, B. Matthews Eatery, or Goose Feathers Café.
  • Lunch: Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room for classic Southern buffet (arrive early).
  • Dinner: The Grey for upscale Southern cuisine, The Olde Pink House for historic ambiance, or Treylor Park for creative casual bites.
  • Evening Drinks: Artillery Bar, Alley Cat Lounge, or The Peregrin rooftop bar for views.

Tips and Advice

  • Wear comfortable shoes—cobblestone streets are charming but can be tiring.
  • Rideshare is convenient for excursions outside the historic district or returning after dinner.
  • If you enjoy walking tours, consider a historic or architectural tour early in your trip to get oriented.
  • October weather is usually mild, so outdoor dining and walking are very pleasant.

With only two days, focusing mainly on the historic district and one optional excursion (like Tybee or Wormsloe) is a good balance. You’ll get a strong sense of Savannah’s charm without feeling rushed.
