Kenai Fjords vs. Major Marine

We will be in Seward on Fri, Jul 25 prior to leaving on our cruise the following evening. We are 4 adults and a 9-year old (who loves nature, jr. ranger badges and really wants to see an orca).

Is there any reason to choose Major Marine vs. Kenai Fjords? We're probably going to do the 6-hour national park tour and it looks like they are nearly identical. Kenai Fjords is slightly cheaper (and know they may be even cheaper if they do a president's day sale).

Thank you!

Both Kenai Fjords Tours and Major Marine Tours offer 6-hour excursions that explore the Kenai Fjords National Park, and for many travelers, the experiences are quite similar. However, there are some distinctions that might help you decide, especially traveling with a 9-year-old interested in wildlife and Jr. Ranger activities.

Kenai Fjords Tours:

  • Well-established operator with a long history in Seward; generally reliable service and good customer reviews.
  • Often slightly cheaper, especially if booking during promotions.
  • Vessels are typically larger, which can be more stable for families or those prone to seasickness.
  • Good chance to see wildlife such as whales, puffins, otters, sea lions, and glaciers.
  • Professional naturalist guides provide educational commentary and often engage kids with fun facts about the park and wildlife.

Major Marine Tours:

  • Smaller operator with a reputation for more personalized, intimate experiences on smaller boats.
  • Smaller vessel size can allow closer wildlife encounters, but may be less stable in rough waters.
  • Guides are knowledgeable and may provide more tailored commentary for families and children.
  • Still offers excellent opportunities to see orcas, humpback whales, and other marine wildlife.
  • Some travelers prefer the experience for its flexibility and smaller crowd feel.

Other considerations:

  • Both tours have similar departure points in Seward and similar itineraries for the 6-hour national park route.
  • Orca sightings are not guaranteed with either company; they are seasonal and dependent on local conditions, but both offer a good chance.
  • Booking early is recommended, especially in July, as tours fill quickly.
  • For a family with a child focused on nature and badges, Kenai Fjords Tours may provide slightly more structured educational activities.

In summary, if cost and a slightly larger, more stable boat are priorities, Kenai Fjords Tours is a solid choice. If you prefer a smaller, more intimate experience and don’t mind a potentially bumpier ride, Major Marine Tours could be appealing. Both offer excellent wildlife viewing and are suitable for families.
