6 days 7 nights in KC

Hi I’m coming up from socal California staying for the copa America in summer but wondering if it’s worth doing a day or 2 in St. Louis or staying in KC? any nearby spots to visit? I am staying through the July holiday. If any 3/4 star hotel recommendations I would consider also thanks in advance! I won’t be having a vehicle also.

Spending 6 days and 7 nights in Kansas City can give you a great mix of sports, culture, and cuisine without needing a vehicle, though adding a day or two in St. Louis is only feasible if you plan to fly or take a long train/bus trip, as the distance is roughly 250 miles each way (about 4–5 hours driving). For most visitors without a car, staying in KC is the more practical choice.

In Kansas City, you can explore a variety of neighborhoods, attractions, and dining experiences. Since you’ll be there for Copa America, staying close to the stadium or downtown is convenient for game days and walking distance to restaurants, bars, and cultural sites.

  • Downtown/Kansas City Crossroads: Close to the Power & Light District, sports venues, and walking-friendly areas. Plenty of restaurants, entertainment, and nightlife.
  • Country Club Plaza: A charming shopping/dining district with Spanish architecture, fountains, and pedestrian-friendly streets. It’s a little further out but accessible via rideshare or streetcar.
  • Union Station/Westside: Home to the Science City, museums, and attractions like the National WWI Museum, easy to explore without a car.

Nearby spots to visit from KC without a car include:

  • The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (beautiful grounds and free admission)
  • Union Station and the Science City
  • The National World War I Museum & Memorial
  • Kansas City Streetcar route, which connects downtown to the Country Club Plaza and nearby areas
  • River Market/City Market area with local shops, farmers markets, and casual dining

If you really want to include St. Louis, consider taking a short flight, as buses or trains are slower and may eat into your sightseeing time. If you skip St. Louis, you’ll have more time to enjoy Kansas City’s barbecue scene, jazz heritage, and local attractions.

Hotel recommendations for 3–4 star accommodations in Kansas City (especially convenient without a car):

  • 21c Museum Hotel Kansas City – downtown, boutique style, includes contemporary art displays
  • Hotel Kansas City – historic property downtown, walkable to attractions and restaurants
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Kansas City Downtown – practical, comfortable, centrally located
  • Hyatt Regency Kansas City – large hotel, connected to the Kansas City Convention Center and within walking distance to the Power & Light District

In summary, for a summer trip without a vehicle, focusing on Kansas City makes the most sense. You’ll have plenty to do, easy access to dining and attractions, and a more relaxed pace without the long travel to St. Louis. If flights or trains are convenient and affordable, a one-day St. Louis visit is possible, but you’d need to plan it carefully to maximize your time.
