Savannah to Charleston
Hello,
I'm heading out from the west coast for a solo adventure to explore Savannah and Charleston in mid-late Nov. I have 6 days and 6 nights. I'm looking to stay in the historic districts of Savannah and Charleston and making a stop for a night or two in Beaufort.
Is 2 day/nights in Savannah, Beaufort and Charleston a good choice? I would love your recommendation.
Thanks!
Your 6-day, 6-night itinerary exploring Savannah, Beaufort, and Charleston sounds like a wonderful plan! These three cities are all rich in history, Southern charm, and natural beauty, making them perfect for a solo adventure. Based on your question, I believe a 2-day stay in each city would give you a great taste of what each has to offer, without feeling too rushed. Here's a breakdown of each destination and how you can make the most of your time:
Savannah (2 Days / 2 Nights)
Savannah's historic district is one of the most beautiful and walkable areas in the U.S., and it's a perfect spot to begin your journey. Two days will give you time to explore the city’s picturesque squares, charming streets, and stunning architecture. Be sure to visit:
- Forsyth Park – The iconic fountain and the surrounding park are great for a leisurely stroll.
- River Street – Lined with shops, restaurants, and cobblestone streets, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot.
- Bonaventure Cemetery – This historic cemetery is famous for its stately oak trees and hauntingly beautiful graves.
- Historic District Walking Tour – A guided tour can help you uncover the hidden history of Savannah.
- Cathedral of St. John the Baptist – This stunning cathedral is a must-see for its beautiful architecture and interior.
Beaufort (1 Day / 1 Night)
Beaufort is a charming small town that’s perfect for a peaceful, relaxing stop between Savannah and Charleston. It offers a more laid-back atmosphere while still being rich in history and natural beauty. Beaufort is known for its antebellum architecture, so a walk around the historic district is a must. Key spots include:
- The Waterfront Park – Enjoy beautiful views of the Beaufort River and the nearby marshlands.
- Old Point Historic District – Wander through one of the oldest areas in the city, filled with historic homes and waterfront views.
- The Beaufort History Museum – A small museum showcasing the rich history of this coastal town.
- The Hunting Island State Park – If you have time, the park offers stunning beaches and trails.
Charleston (2 Days / 2 Nights)
Charleston is a larger city than Savannah, but it retains its Southern charm and boasts a wealth of history, culture, and beautiful beaches. Two days will give you time to explore the historic district, take a boat tour, and visit some of the region's most famous landmarks. Here are a few must-see spots:
- The Battery and White Point Garden – A scenic promenade with views of historic homes and fortifications along the waterfront.
- Charleston City Market – Explore the historic market for local crafts, food, and souvenirs.
- Rainbow Row – A beautiful row of colorful historic homes that's perfect for a photo op.
- Magnolia Plantation and Gardens – One of the oldest plantations in America, with beautiful gardens and a historic house tour.
- Fort Sumter National Monument – Take a boat ride to this historic fort, where the Civil War began.
Travel Tips:
- Driving between cities: The drive from Savannah to Beaufort is about 45 minutes, and from Beaufort to Charleston is around 1.5 to 2 hours, making this a comfortable road trip with plenty of scenic stops along the way.
- Accommodation: Each city offers plenty of historic B&Bs, inns, and boutique hotels. Staying in the historic districts will put you in the heart of the action, and you’ll be within walking distance of many attractions.
- Flexible itinerary: If you find that you want to extend your stay in one city, you can adjust your plans accordingly. Charleston is larger, so you may find there’s more to see and do, but both Savannah and Beaufort offer plenty of charm and things to explore in a relaxed setting.
Overall, your choice to spend two days in each city is a solid plan. It gives you enough time to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of each destination without feeling too rushed. Enjoy your trip to the South – it's sure to be an unforgettable adventure!
