Is it safe to walk downtown at night?

Hi Atlanta experts. My wife and I are flying into Atlanta at 10:30 PM and staying downtown at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Ted Turner Dr. We are contemplating on taking MARTA to the Peachtree Station which is a short walk to the hotel. Given the late hour (~11:30 PM?) , is it safe to walk to the hotel? Seems silly to take an Uber for 3 short blocks. Your advice is greatly appreciated

Hi there!

It's great that you're staying downtown and considering walking from Peachtree Station to the Hampton Inn. While downtown Atlanta has a lot of great spots to explore, it's important to consider safety, especially at night.

In general, downtown Atlanta has areas that are fairly safe, but like many urban areas, there can be spots that are less well-lit or have lower foot traffic late at night. The area around the Hampton Inn on Ted Turner Dr is typically considered safe, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Proximity to the hotel: The walk from Peachtree Station to your hotel is short, about 3 blocks, and should only take around 5-7 minutes. It's a well-trafficked area during the day, and while it’s quieter at night, the hotel is located in a relatively busy part of downtown.
  • Walking at night: Walking at night in any city requires being more aware of your surroundings. While the immediate area around the hotel is generally safe, it's a good idea to stick to well-lit streets and avoid alleys or areas that feel deserted.
  • MARTA and Peachtree Station: Peachtree Station is located in the heart of downtown, and while MARTA is generally safe, it’s always a good idea to stay alert, especially late at night. If you're not familiar with the area, you can always ask a MARTA employee or fellow passenger for guidance when getting off at the station.
  • Alternative to walking: If you’re unsure about walking, especially late at night, taking an Uber or Lyft for a 3-block ride can be a good option, especially for peace of mind. It’s not silly at all, especially if you’re looking to minimize any potential risks or just want to get settled quickly after a long flight.

Overall safety: While downtown is generally safe, I would recommend using your judgment based on how you feel. If you're comfortable with the walk and the area seems well-lit and busy enough, you should be fine. However, if it feels uncomfortable or you just prefer the convenience, taking an Uber is a quick and safe option, especially if you're arriving late at night.

I hope that helps, and I wish you a safe and enjoyable trip to Atlanta!
