For a family reunion in December near Atlanta, you have a variety of great options for resorts, vacation spots, and even Airbnb rentals within 50-75 miles of the city. Here’s a guide to some of the best places to stay, as well as the pros and cons of choosing a resort versus an Airbnb for your gathering.

Resorts & Family-Friendly Options Near Atlanta:

If you're looking for a resort-style experience with amenities like pools, activities, and dining options, here are a few resorts and retreat centers that would be perfect for a family reunion:

  • Lake Lanier Islands Resort – About 50 miles north of Atlanta, this resort is set on the beautiful Lake Lanier and offers a wide range of family activities, including water sports, a marina, a spa, and even a winter-themed event in December. It’s a great choice for families who want to enjoy nature, along with some holiday cheer.
  • Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa – Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 75 miles north of Atlanta, this resort offers a stunning mountain retreat with golf, horseback riding, hiking, and spa treatments. It’s perfect for families who enjoy outdoor activities and the beauty of nature, especially if you want a cozy, wintry setting for your reunion.
  • Callaway Resort & Gardens – Located about 70 miles from Atlanta in Pine Mountain, this beautiful resort is perfect for families. It has botanical gardens, nature trails, a beach, and even a Christmas Lights Spectacular event in December. The resort offers various family activities, and it’s a great spot for those wanting to explore nature and unwind in a scenic environment.
  • The Resort at Paws Up – A little further from Atlanta (about 75 miles), this luxurious resort offers glamping and a more rustic, yet upscale, experience. Families can enjoy outdoor adventures such as horseback riding, ATV tours, and fishing while staying in luxury tents or cabins.

Airbnb Options:

If your family prefers a more homey or private experience, renting an Airbnb could be a great alternative. With Airbnb, you can rent large houses or cabins that allow you to stay together as a group while still having your own space. Some advantages of Airbnb include:

  • More flexibility in terms of the type of space you want (e.g., large house, cabin, or even a farm house).
  • The opportunity to cook your own meals together, which is perfect for family gatherings.
  • Greater privacy, as you’ll have an entire property to yourselves.

Some specific suggestions for Airbnb rentals in the area include:

  • Spacious Mountain Retreats – Look for properties in the North Georgia mountains (e.g., Blue Ridge or Blairsville), which are within a 75-mile drive from Atlanta. These homes are often large enough to accommodate multiple families, with plenty of outdoor space for activities and relaxation.
  • Lakefront Homes or Cabins – Check out properties around Lake Lanier or Lake Allatoona. These lakefront rentals can offer families a fun, scenic setting with opportunities for fishing, boating, and more.
  • Large Homes in Historic Towns – Consider Airbnb options in towns like Madison, Oxford, or Covington, which are known for their charming historic settings. Many of these homes are spacious and perfect for family gatherings while being just a short drive from Atlanta.

Which is Better: Resort vs. Airbnb?

Both options have their benefits, and the best choice will depend on your family's preferences and needs:

  • Resorts: Resorts like Lake Lanier Islands or Brasstown Valley offer plenty of activities on-site, including organized events, dining, and entertainment. This can be a great option if you want a hassle-free experience with everything taken care of for you.
  • Airbnb: Renting an Airbnb gives your family more control over your schedule and space, allowing you to have private time together and cook your own meals. It’s a great option for those who want more flexibility and privacy.

Conclusion:

If your family prefers a more structured experience with built-in activities, a resort might be the way to go. Resorts like Lake Lanier Islands or Callaway Resort & Gardens offer family-friendly amenities and activities that can make your reunion easy and fun. However, if your family enjoys a more relaxed, private gathering where you can cook, unwind, and have more flexibility, renting an Airbnb could be a great option. Either way, there are plenty of options within a short drive from Atlanta that will make your family reunion special!
