Christmas dinner Options

We have arrived (yay!) and are staying at Papakea for the next 2 weeks. Any recommendations for Christmas dinner? I expect many places may be closed, so I am trying to decide if I need to plan on making something at the condo.

It's great to hear you've arrived on Maui and are staying at Papakea! For Christmas dinner, you’re right to consider that some restaurants may be closed, but there are still several options to choose from depending on your preferences. Here are a few recommendations for both dining out and making your own festive meal at the condo:

Dining Out Options:

  • Old Lahaina Luau: If you're looking for a traditional Hawaiian experience, the Old Lahaina Luau is a popular choice. They typically offer a special holiday dinner with all the traditional Hawaiian dishes and entertainment. It’s best to check ahead as reservations are essential and availability may be limited for Christmas.
  • Mama's Fish House: A Maui institution, Mama’s Fish House in Paia offers fresh seafood with beautiful oceanfront views. They usually have special holiday menus, but reservations fill up quickly, so it’s a good idea to book well in advance.
  • The Plantation House: Located in Kapalua, this restaurant offers incredible ocean views and a classic island atmosphere. They often have a special holiday menu and it’s a great place for a festive meal with a view.
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua: For a more upscale experience, The Ritz-Carlton typically offers a festive buffet or plated dinner on Christmas Day, complete with holiday-themed dishes. Call ahead to confirm if reservations are required.
  • Kimo's: Located in Lahaina, Kimo’s offers a beautiful setting right on the water. They often have a special Christmas dinner with local flavors, seafood, and prime rib.

Take-Out Options:

  • Diamond Bakery: Known for their delicious baked goods, they offer special holiday meals like roast turkey or ham for take-out, which you can enjoy back at your condo. Check with them ahead of time for availability and pre-ordering options.
  • Costco (Kahului): If you want to prepare a holiday meal at the condo, Costco in Kahului offers pre-cooked meals such as ham, turkey, and sides. They also have a variety of desserts and holiday treats.
  • Down to Earth Organic & Natural: They offer fresh salads, platters, and holiday meals with a focus on organic ingredients. This is a great option if you're looking for something a little lighter or plant-based for your holiday feast.

Cooking at the Condo:

If you prefer a more relaxed holiday dinner at your condo, Papakea has full kitchens for preparing your own meal. Consider picking up a fresh turkey, ham, or even a local fish like ono or mahi-mahi from a nearby grocery store or farmers market. You can make your own sides, such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, or a fresh salad. If you're in the mood for dessert, many local bakeries offer festive pies and cakes that would complement your meal.

General Tips:

  • Call ahead: Regardless of where you plan to dine or get take-out, it’s essential to call ahead to check on availability and make reservations, as Christmas is a busy time on the island.
  • Grocery Stores: Consider visiting Safeway or Foodland for holiday meal supplies. They typically carry special Christmas items, including pre-cooked meals and holiday-ready desserts.
  • Farmers Markets: Maui’s farmers markets, such as those in Upcountry or Kihei, may offer fresh local produce, meats, and specialty items for your homemade holiday meal.

With a little planning, you can either enjoy a wonderful meal at a local restaurant or create your own festive holiday dinner in your condo. Enjoy your Christmas on Maui!
