Hi everyone
My wife and I are planning a visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton in the first week of September.
We are flying in / out of Bozeman, and need to decide whether to return to Bozeman via Big Sky and the Gallatin River (western exit) or via Paradise Valley and Chico Falls (northern exit). We are entering the park through the eastern entrance via the Beartooth Hwy.
We are going to cover all of the northern and southern loops inside the park, so this is purely a query regarding the best route back to Bozeman.
We are interested in scenic drives, floats/rafting, hiking, horse riding and learning fly fishing. Both routes seem to have these activities in spades, but I am keen for any recommendations if we were to choose one.
Many thanks.
Ben
Both the Gallatin River and Paradise Valley offer incredible scenic drives and numerous outdoor activities, so you’re in for a treat either way. Below, I’ll break down both routes, highlighting what each offers to help you make your decision:
Gallatin River via Big Sky (Western Exit):
This route offers a stunning drive through the Gallatin Canyon, which is famous for its beautiful rugged cliffs and scenic river views. It’s a bit more remote and offers a peaceful, quiet atmosphere. Here are some key highlights:
Paradise Valley and Chico Falls (Northern Exit):
This route takes you along the Paradise Valley, which is famous for its sweeping mountain vistas and the Yellowstone River. It’s a little more developed and offers several charming towns along the way. Highlights include:
Recommendation:
If you are looking for a slightly more remote and quieter route with beautiful river and canyon views, I’d suggest going through the Gallatin River via Big Sky. The drive is gorgeous, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities for fly fishing and rafting.
If you’re interested in seeing more of the valley, enjoying hot springs, and experiencing some quaint towns along the way, then the Paradise Valley route would be a better option. This route also offers great fly fishing, as well as excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
In either case, both routes are beautiful, and you’ll be able to enjoy scenic drives, outdoor activities, and plenty of opportunities for exploration. Enjoy your trip and the beauty of Montana!
