We are coming from the UK Next April to Visit Chicago Vegas and New Orleans.to use My Data on my UK Sim will cost me a Fortune, i only want to use Google Maps For Directions in the places we visit, any suggestions please on Buying a Pay as you go Sim for the USA Thank You

It's a great idea to get a local pay-as-you-go SIM card for your trip to the USA, especially since using your UK SIM for data in the US can be very expensive. Here are some options for buying a SIM card and staying connected during your travels:

1) Prepaid SIM Cards in the US: There are several mobile providers in the US that offer pay-as-you-go prepaid SIM cards, which are ideal for short-term visitors. These cards usually come with a set amount of data, and you can top up as needed. Here are a few popular options:

  • T-Mobile: T-Mobile offers a great prepaid plan for travelers with options like the "T-Mobile Tourist Plan," which includes unlimited data (up to a certain high-speed limit), text, and calls within the US for about $30-$40 for 3 weeks. You can buy this plan at the airport or at any T-Mobile store in the city.
  • AT&T: AT&T also offers prepaid SIM cards that include data, calls, and texts. Their prepaid plans usually start around $30 for 3GB of data and go up to $60 for 15GB. You can buy an AT&T prepaid SIM card at the airport, or at any AT&T store.
  • Mint Mobile: Mint Mobile is a budget-friendly option that uses T-Mobile's network. Their prepaid plans start at around $15 for 3GB of data for 3 weeks. You can buy SIM cards for Mint Mobile at stores like Walmart or online before you travel.
  • Visible (by Verizon): Visible offers a simple and affordable plan with unlimited data, text, and calls for about $40/month. You can order a SIM card online and have it shipped to your home or pick it up in stores in the US.

2) Where to Buy the SIM Card: You can purchase SIM cards at various locations in the US:

  • Airports: Most major airports, including Chicago O'Hare, Las Vegas McCarran, and New Orleans Louis Armstrong, have kiosks or stores that sell prepaid SIM cards from providers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. This is a convenient option if you want to get your SIM card right when you land.
  • Mobile Carrier Stores: You can also buy SIM cards at official carrier stores or chain stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.
  • Online: If you want to have your SIM card ready before you travel, you can order one online through the carrier’s website or through third-party retailers like Amazon or eBay.

3) Using Google Maps: Since you'll primarily be using Google Maps for directions, most of the prepaid data plans should be sufficient, as Google Maps uses a relatively small amount of data compared to other apps like video streaming. Even with 2-5GB of data, you should be fine for a week or two, especially if you're mostly using Maps and some basic apps.

4) Additional Considerations:

  • Coverage: Make sure the carrier you choose has good coverage in the cities you will be visiting (Chicago, Vegas, and New Orleans). T-Mobile and AT&T have extensive networks in most urban areas.
  • Roaming and International Calls: If you plan on making calls to the UK, some prepaid plans offer international calling, but you may want to check the rates or add an international calling option.
  • SIM Card Size: Be sure to check your phone’s SIM card size (nano, micro, or standard) before buying a SIM card.

5) Alternative Option: If you prefer not to change your SIM, you could also consider using an international roaming plan with your UK provider, though this is often more expensive than purchasing a local SIM. Some providers, like Three UK, offer reasonable roaming data packages for the US.

In summary, for a cost-effective option with good coverage, I’d recommend going with T-Mobile’s "Tourist Plan" or Mint Mobile. You can easily pick them up at the airport or order online in advance for convenience. Safe travels, and enjoy your time in the US!
