Whale watch catamarans from Kaanapali Beach

We will be on Kaanapali Beach the second and third weeks of January. There seems to be multiple Cruise Cat's that seem relatively similar (Trilogy, Gemini, Hula Girl, and others). We are looking for the largest boats. Or are they all of similar size? Any other advice? In the past we always took the Pacific Whale Foundation's Lahaina trips. Big boats! Always saw lotsa' whales.

It sounds like you're gearing up for an exciting whale-watching trip during peak season in Maui! Kaanapali Beach is a great spot to embark on whale-watching catamarans, and there are several excellent options for larger boats. Here’s some insight into the options and what to expect:

Boat Sizes and Options:

  • Trilogy – Trilogy offers both larger catamarans and smaller vessels, depending on the tour. Their larger boats are spacious, providing plenty of room for guests. Trilogy is known for its great service and knowledgeable crew.
  • Gemini – Gemini is one of the larger boats in the area, and it provides a comfortable, stable ride, especially for those who prefer not to be crowded. The boat is well-equipped for whale watching, offering ample viewing space and indoor/outdoor options.
  • Hula Girl – The Hula Girl is another luxury option, often praised for its large size and upscale amenities. It's a spacious catamaran with an elegant experience, making it an excellent choice if you're looking for comfort along with your whale-watching adventure.
  • Pacific Whale Foundation – You’re already familiar with their Lahaina trips, which are generally on larger boats. The Foundation has a fleet of different sizes, but their larger boats have a reputation for offering excellent visibility and comfort during whale-watching excursions. Since you mentioned you’re used to big boats, they could be a great choice for you again.

Are All Boats Similar in Size? While most of the catamarans operating out of Kaanapali are similar in size (usually between 50 and 70 feet), there are subtle differences. Some, like the Hula Girl and Gemini, tend to be a little larger and more luxurious, offering better amenities. The Trilogy boats are typically smaller but still offer a good experience. It’s always a good idea to check the specific boat size when booking to ensure you're getting the largest option available.

Other Considerations:

  • Booking in Advance – January is a peak time for whale watching, so it’s advisable to book your tour in advance to secure a spot on one of the larger boats.
  • Morning vs. Afternoon Tours – Early morning whale-watching tours are typically less crowded and provide calmer waters. However, the afternoon tours may offer warmer weather and additional whale sightings, as the whales are often more active later in the day.
  • Experienced Crews – All the companies mentioned (Trilogy, Gemini, Hula Girl, and Pacific Whale Foundation) are known for their expert crews who are well-versed in whale behavior and can help ensure you see plenty of action!

Conclusion: If you're looking for a large boat experience, the Hula Girl and Gemini would be the best choices out of Kaanapali, both offering spacious decks, comfort, and excellent service. The Trilogy and Pacific Whale Foundation options are also great, but they tend to have a bit smaller of a capacity. Either way, you're bound to enjoy an unforgettable whale-watching experience!
