I visited Maui in the 90s, and with a handrawn map found a beautiful lagoon for snorkeling south of Makena Beach. There was no signage; we had to count telephone poles and walk across lave rock to get there. Not sure I could find it now (arriving in 2 days). Anyone know this place, and could you offer directions? thanks!
Maui’s south shore near Makena Beach has several smaller, less-known coves and lagoons that are excellent for snorkeling, but many of them are unmarked and require careful navigation across lava rock. The location you’re describing sounds like one of these hidden lagoons, often referred to by locals as “secret snorkeling spots” south of Big Beach (Makena Beach). Access usually involves walking across uneven terrain and counting landmarks such as telephone poles or rock formations, similar to your past experience.
Since these areas are not officially maintained or signed, exact directions can be tricky. The general approach is to park safely along the access road near Makena or Big Beach, then follow the shoreline south along the lava rock. Use natural landmarks and prior experience to guide you. Low tide tends to make the lava crossing easier, while high tide may submerge some paths. Snorkelers should wear water shoes for traction and protection.
If you’re unsure of the exact spot, consider asking local snorkel or tour shops in Kihei or Wailea—they may recognize the description and offer advice on the safest access points. Alternatively, guided snorkeling tours in the area often know these hidden lagoons and can ensure a safe experience while showing the best spots for marine life.
In summary, while exact directions can’t be guaranteed due to the unmarked nature of the lagoon, approaching it by heading south from Makena Beach, using natural markers, and exercising caution on the lava rocks will likely lead you to the same secluded snorkeling area you visited in the 90s.
