Kalalau Trail closed
Apparently per usual they got more rain up north than we did today, as the Kalalau Trail is closed.
Aloha! Yes, the Kalalau Trail is often closed due to rain, especially during the wetter months on Kauai's North Shore. The trail can become dangerous when the conditions get wet, as the trail becomes slippery and the stream crossings can become unsafe. It's important to check the official trail status before you go, as closures can happen on short notice, and they can vary by day depending on weather conditions.
If you're still interested in exploring the stunning landscapes of Kauai despite the Kalalau Trail closure, there are other excellent hikes and activities to enjoy in the area:
- Hanakapiai Falls Hike: This shorter hike (about 4 miles round trip) is still accessible and offers a beautiful waterfall, though be prepared for some muddy conditions. It's a great alternative if you're not able to access the full Kalalau Trail.
- Na Pali Coast Boat Tour: While you can't hike Kalalau, you can still get a view of the stunning Na Pali Coast by boat. Many boat tours leave from Hanalei Bay and take you along the coast, offering incredible views and sometimes even opportunities to spot marine life.
- Koke'e State Park: On the opposite side of the island, Koke'e offers beautiful forest hikes with incredible canyon views (such as the Waimea Canyon Lookout and the Kalalau Lookout). It's a great spot for more accessible trails and scenic views of the island's natural beauty.
- Limahuli Garden & Preserve: If you’re looking for something less strenuous, this botanical garden located near the North Shore offers a peaceful walk through beautiful landscapes and views of the surrounding mountains.
For safety reasons, it’s best to respect trail closures, especially when it comes to the Kalalau Trail, which can become hazardous when conditions are wet. While it’s disappointing when closures happen, Kauai has plenty of other ways to enjoy its lush landscapes and stunning views. Be sure to check trail status updates and weather forecasts before heading out!
