Proposed Road Trip - Opinions Welcomed!

Hi guys, we are a couple in our 50s about to embark on a 4-month long road trip and have decided to start in Michigan. We like scenic drives, strolling new cities/towns, immersing ourselves in local culture, hikes, bike riding, and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Feedback is welcomed on our proposed itinerary:

Day 1 - Leisurely Drive from St Joseph to Sleeping Bear area

Day 2 & 3 - Sleeping Bear area

Day 4 - Indian River - explore local areas

Day 5 - Mackinac Island

Day 6 & 7 - Pictured Rocks area

Other than bike rentals on Macinac and an evening cruise at Pictured Rocks, we have no other activities planned.

Are there any "not- to miss" things we should add to our list? Is our timeline doable without feeling rushed?

Excited to experience the Great Lakes area. In our extensive travel of the US, we have never been to any of the Great Lakes! Thank you in advance for weighing in :)

It sounds like you have a wonderful road trip planned, and the Great Lakes area is such a beautiful place to explore! Your itinerary already includes some fantastic spots, and I think it’s very doable for a relaxed trip. Here are a few suggestions and "must-see" additions to enhance your experience:

Day 1 - Leisurely Drive from St Joseph to Sleeping Bear Dunes:

This drive will take you along scenic routes, so be sure to take your time. The drive through the northwest Michigan countryside offers great views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscapes. You may want to stop at a few of the charming small towns along the way, such as Saugatuck or Holland, especially if you enjoy strolling through art galleries, boutiques, and quaint cafes.

Day 2 & 3 - Sleeping Bear Dunes Area:

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a great spot for hiking, biking, and taking in panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Be sure to check out the Dune Climb and if you're up for it, hike up the steep dunes for amazing views. Consider visiting Empire Bluff Trail, a relatively short hike but with rewarding views. Also, don't miss the Crystal Lake, which is nearby and offers crystal-clear water for a swim or a relaxing walk along its shore.

  • Wine Tasting: If you enjoy wine, this area is also known for its vineyards. Stop by a few local wineries, like Chateau Chantal for a tasting with a view of the bay.

Day 4 - Indian River:

Indian River is a charming small town, but make sure you also take time to visit the nearby Oden Fish Hatchery or explore some of the local trails. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in nature and local history. You can even rent bikes here if you’re interested in a relaxing bike ride through the area.

Day 5 - Mackinac Island:

Taking a ferry to Mackinac Island is a highlight of this trip. Besides renting bikes and taking the evening cruise at Pictured Rocks, here are a few additional things you can do:

  • Arch Rock: One of the most iconic spots on Mackinac Island, it’s a natural limestone arch with stunning views. You can either hike or take a horse-drawn carriage ride to reach it.
  • Mackinac Island State Park: Explore this park with a bike ride or hike, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Visit Fort Mackinac: A well-preserved fort offering historical reenactments and spectacular views of the island and lake.

Day 6 & 7 - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:

Pictured Rocks is truly stunning, and I’m glad you’ve planned to take the evening cruise, which will give you a wonderful perspective of the colorful cliffs. Besides the cruise, here are a couple of additional things to consider:

  • Hike the Chapel Falls Trail: This is a short, moderate hike that leads to Chapel Falls, with fantastic photo opportunities along the way.
  • Kayak or Canoe: If you enjoy water activities, consider renting a kayak or canoe to get up close to the Pictured Rocks cliffs from the water.

Additional Suggestions:

  • Day trip to Tahquamenon Falls: Located a bit further north, the Tahquamenon Falls are a spectacular sight, especially the Upper Falls, which is one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern United States. It's a great spot for hiking and enjoying the outdoors.
  • Explore Marquette: If you have extra time on Day 7, the town of Marquette is worth a visit. It’s a picturesque small town with great waterfront views and fun local eateries. It's also home to the Marquette Maritime Museum and some scenic trails.

All in all, your timeline seems very manageable, and you’ll have time to explore and take in the beauty of the area at a relaxed pace. The Great Lakes region is full of natural beauty, small towns with charm, and plenty of outdoor activities, so you’re in for an amazing trip. Enjoy your adventure, and feel free to adjust based on your pace and interests!
