March itinerary help
I'm considering a spring break ski family vacation on March 8-15th, possibly at The Highlands. Any suggestions on things we could do on the days that we don't ski, if we were to base ourselves around Petrosky or Harbor Springs? We would love to get to Sleeping Bear Dunes but not sure if it is worth it in the winter. An indoor pool, quaint shopping, maybe a sleigh ride?
Your spring break ski trip sounds wonderful, and Petoskey and Harbor Springs are great areas to stay while enjoying The Highlands for skiing. If you're looking for fun activities on the days when you're not skiing, there are plenty of things to do in the area that cater to both relaxation and adventure. Here are some suggestions that would complement your trip nicely:
- Indoor Pool & Relaxation: Many hotels and resorts in the area, including The Highlands, offer indoor pools and spas. These are great options for relaxing after a day on the slopes or if you're looking to take it easy. Look for resorts with on-site amenities like hot tubs, saunas, and wellness facilities to unwind. The Boyne Highlands Resort itself has great options for family relaxation.
- Quaint Shopping in Harbor Springs: Harbor Springs has a charming downtown area with quaint shops, art galleries, and local boutiques. You can spend a leisurely day shopping for unique souvenirs, locally made crafts, and seasonal goods. Don’t miss places like Harbor Springs Outfitters for outdoor gear or the Harbor Springs Farmers Market for local delicacies (check for seasonal openings).
- Sleigh Rides: A sleigh ride is a classic winter activity, and there are several places around Harbor Springs and Petoskey that offer them. Wilderness Sleigh Ride offers scenic rides through snowy landscapes. It’s a great way to enjoy the winter beauty of the area while keeping things fun for the whole family.
- Visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes: While the dunes are beautiful year-round, in winter, the landscape takes on a serene and tranquil quality, especially after a fresh snowfall. If you're up for a winter adventure, consider a visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The trails are open, and the snow-covered dunes are stunning, though it can be a bit challenging to hike in the winter due to snow and ice. It’s definitely worth a visit if your family enjoys winter activities like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
- Petoskey State Park: Petoskey State Park offers great winter hiking and cross-country skiing trails. If you're looking for something a bit more active but not as intense as downhill skiing, this is a lovely spot for outdoor activities. The park is also known for its beautiful winter landscapes and peaceful surroundings.
- Winter Wildlife Viewing: Northern Michigan is known for its abundant wildlife, and winter offers some unique opportunities for viewing animals in their natural habitats. Bring binoculars and take a drive or hike around the Little Traverse Conservancy areas or nearby nature preserves to spot winter birds and other wildlife.
As for your question about Sleeping Bear Dunes, while it’s stunning in the winter, I’d say it’s worth visiting if you’re up for the winter adventure. However, keep in mind that the dunes can be challenging to navigate during the colder months, so check trail conditions and be prepared for possible snow and icy conditions. If the weather is harsh, you might want to save it for a future spring or summer visit.
For more family-friendly indoor options, consider visiting local museums, like the Petoskey Area Historical Society or the Great Lakes Environmental Festival if it’s available during your visit. These offer great educational experiences that can break up the winter days.
All in all, your trip sounds fantastic, and Northern Michigan has so much to offer both in terms of winter adventure and cozy indoor activities. I hope these suggestions help you plan the perfect spring break getaway!
