Hi all,
DH and I will be spending two nights on Oahu at the end of our trip to Maui and Kauai next December. The trip is our 25th anniversary trip and we wanted to cap it off with two nights at a nice hotel (we will be staying at self-catering condos otherwise).
We have been to Oahu a few times before and spent a night at Turtle Bay Resort (as it was then) 10 years ago. I recall how magical it was to open the lanai doors and listen to the sound of the waves at night. We were lucky enough to be on the north shore during one of the pro surfing competitions at Pipeline. I really wanted to go back to Turtle Bay for this reason.
But reading some of the posts it seems like people prefer the Kahala. I know we stopped for a high tea there on our last trip and I recall the beach being lovely but I dont know if the rooms overlook the ocean such that you hear the waves at night they way they do at Turtle Bay. I know there is more traffic on the north shore but our flight the last day is at 5 pm so I dont know if I should be really concerned about getting to airport the next day.
Grateful for any feedback on which hotel would have that oceanfront "sound" that I really want. We will have a rental car for Oahu but really just want to enjoy the pool and hot tub at the hotel (and play pickleball) at the TB! So not too worried about being far from things (other than needing to get to airport on last day).
Thanks in advance!
It sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned for your 25th anniversary! Both the Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay and the Kahala are amazing resorts, but they offer different experiences, so it really depends on what you're looking for in terms of atmosphere, location, and that special "oceanfront sound" you're hoping for.
Here are a few things to consider when deciding between the two resorts:
Turtle Bay Resort (Now Ritz-Carlton Turtle Bay) Turtle Bay is located on the North Shore of Oahu, offering a more laid-back, nature-focused atmosphere. The resort is set on a large property, surrounded by lush landscapes and coastline. If you want to hear the sound of the waves at night, this is definitely the place to go. Many of the rooms at Turtle Bay offer fantastic oceanfront views, and the sound of the surf is a prominent feature, especially if you're staying in one of the oceanfront rooms or suites. The North Shore is quieter, with less traffic than Waikiki, so you'll really get to enjoy the peaceful sound of the ocean. The property also offers plenty of activities like pickleball, tennis, golf, and hiking trails, which can make for a relaxing stay without the need to leave the resort.
If the sound of waves crashing on the shore at night is a big priority for you, then Turtle Bay would be the best choice. The ambiance here is more secluded and intimate, perfect for a romantic and tranquil anniversary getaway. The added bonus is the proximity to the famous Pipeline surf break and the chance to catch the pro surfing competitions if you happen to be there during that season.
The Kahala Hotel & Resort The Kahala is located closer to Honolulu, offering a more urban feel with its luxury beachfront setting. While the beach is beautiful and the property is stunning, the vibe here is a little more "resort-style" with more amenities and easier access to shopping and dining options in Waikiki. The rooms at The Kahala are gorgeous, and many offer ocean views, but you may not hear the waves as prominently as you would at Turtle Bay. The property is surrounded by more development and has a higher level of foot traffic, which might reduce the overall sense of isolation that you’re seeking for this special trip.
However, The Kahala is known for its exceptional service, beautiful grounds, and fantastic dining options. It’s also an ideal choice if you want to be closer to the city, as it’s just a short drive to Honolulu’s best restaurants, shopping, and attractions. If you’re planning on venturing out more during your stay, The Kahala’s location could make it easier for you to explore Oahu’s offerings. The beach is calm and great for relaxing, but it’s not as wild or remote as Turtle Bay.
Things to Consider:
Overall, if the oceanfront sound and a more tranquil, nature-oriented stay are your priorities, I would recommend returning to Turtle Bay (now Ritz-Carlton). It seems to fit what you're looking for in terms of atmosphere and proximity to the ocean. However, if you’d prefer a more resort-style experience with easy access to city amenities, then The Kahala would also be a fantastic choice. Either way, both properties are beautiful and will provide a lovely, relaxing experience for your anniversary.
Enjoy your trip and congratulations on 25 years!
