Skiing at Big Sky first week of March. Looking for things to do on our off days. It seems that many of the guided tours of Yellowstone end late Feb. and we will just miss those. Any other suggestions to see some of the wildlife and views of the area? Outdoors loving people in their 50's-70's. We will have a 4WD rental car but also open to a day trip that includes transportation that is reasonably priced. Saw all the things to do on the Big Sky website but looking for some recommendations from people who know the area well and what they enjoyed most. Thanks!
It sounds like you’ll have an amazing time skiing at Big Sky, and while Yellowstone tours may be winding down by early March, there are still plenty of fantastic day trip options to explore the beauty and wildlife of the area. Here are some great ideas for things to do during your off days:
1. Wildlife Viewing in Yellowstone National Park: While many of the guided tours may end in late February, the park remains accessible throughout the year, and early March can actually be a great time for wildlife viewing. Winter is prime time for seeing bison, elk, wolves, and even the elusive moose. If you’re comfortable with self-guided exploration, you can drive into the park and explore areas like Lamar Valley or the northern entrance, which are known for good wildlife sightings.
2. Snowshoeing or Cross-Country Skiing: If you love the outdoors, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing can be a great way to explore the winter landscapes around Big Sky. The area offers plenty of options for both beginners and experienced adventurers. You can take a guided snowshoeing tour to explore scenic trails with breathtaking views, or head out on your own in areas like the Gallatin National Forest or the Spanish Peaks.
3. Explore the Bozeman Area: Bozeman is about an hour’s drive from Big Sky and offers plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture, shop, dine, or explore museums. If you're interested in history, the Museum of the Rockies has a fantastic dinosaur exhibit and impressive collections on local history and paleontology. The town also has excellent restaurants and cozy cafes where you can relax after a day of outdoor activities.
4. Visit Big Sky’s Lone Peak and Scenic Views: While you’re in the Big Sky area, don’t miss the opportunity to take the Lone Peak Tram (weather permitting) to the summit for breathtaking panoramic views. It’s a must-see, and even if you’re not skiing, the ride up the mountain is worth it for the incredible scenery.
5. Day Trip to West Yellowstone: If you have the time and want to explore a bit further, West Yellowstone is about 1.5 to 2 hours away and offers both winter recreation and a quaint small-town atmosphere. It’s a great place to explore the winter beauty of the area, check out the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, or take a snowmobile tour into the park. While the Yellowstone tour season might be winding down, snowmobiling can still be a thrilling way to experience the park in winter.
6. Guided Tours with Transportation: If you prefer not to drive on your own, there are several tour companies that offer day trips from Big Sky to nearby areas, including Yellowstone and other scenic locations. Many of these tours provide transportation and are guided, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the views. Be sure to check local tour operators for availability in March, as some offer wildlife tours, snowmobiling trips, and other outdoor adventures.
7. Relax and Enjoy the Local Scene: If you’re looking for a slower-paced day, Big Sky has a laid-back vibe with plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy local eateries, coffee shops, or even a spa day. You can explore the local shops and restaurants, or even unwind with a massage or visit one of the area’s spas to relax after a few days of skiing.
In conclusion, even though some guided tours may end by March, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beauty of Big Sky and the surrounding area. Whether you choose to explore Yellowstone on your own, enjoy a relaxing day in Bozeman, or take advantage of winter activities like snowshoeing and snowmobiling, you're sure to find something that will make your off days memorable.
Have a fantastic trip to Big Sky!
