Lone Mountain Rodeo - Is it worth it?

We will be in Big Sky the second week in June. Mountain activities will not be open for summer and we are looking for things to do with kids (ages 5-12). We are not staying at Lone Mountain Ranch, but we're considering their rodeo and wondering if the experience is worth the cost. It will be the first rodeo of the season. TIA for any feedback!

The Lone Mountain Rodeo in Big Sky is a great option if you're looking for a fun, family-friendly experience while you're in the area. Although mountain activities may not be open in June, the rodeo provides a unique taste of western culture and an exciting way to spend an evening with kids. Here's a breakdown of what to expect and whether it might be worth it for you:

  • Fun for kids: The rodeo offers a thrilling experience for children, especially ages 5-12. Kids will love the action, the excitement of the bull riding, barrel racing, and roping events. It's a lively, high-energy event, and there are often activities specifically geared toward younger children, like a chance to meet the animals or participate in kid-friendly events.
  • Atmosphere: The rodeo is a quintessential western experience. Even though it's the first of the season, the Lone Mountain Ranch Rodeo has a laid-back, authentic vibe that immerses you in the spirit of Big Sky country. The setting, with the backdrop of the mountains, makes for a picturesque and memorable evening.
  • Local Experience: While not staying at Lone Mountain Ranch, attending their rodeo can still give you a feel for local culture. Rodeos are a traditional part of Montana's heritage, and the Lone Mountain Rodeo is one of the better-known events in the region. It’s a great way to connect with the local culture in a fun and interactive way.
  • Cost vs. Value: The cost of the rodeo is generally reasonable for a family outing, but it can vary. For a family with kids, it offers good value, especially considering it's a one-of-a-kind experience. However, if you're used to larger, more commercial rodeos, this might be more low-key. That said, the smaller, more intimate setting might actually work to your advantage if you're looking for something less crowded and more personal.

Overall, if you're looking for something unique to do with kids while in Big Sky and are interested in experiencing the local culture, the Lone Mountain Rodeo is definitely worth considering. It's a fun, exciting activity that gives a great introduction to Montana's cowboy heritage, and your kids will likely have a blast. Just keep in mind that it's an outdoor event, so be prepared for the weather!

Enjoy your trip to Big Sky!
