We're going to be in Portland for one night early/mid April. We know we're going to hit Portland Head Light at sunrise our only morning there. I am wondering where are some good spots for sunset photography in and around Portland. I read an article that suggest Portland Head Light for sunset too so I'm wondering if we should go twice? Sunset Marina might be nice but I'm not sure it's what I'm looking for. We're staying at a Marriott property near the airport (Points) so we won't be in Old Port much, but we are probably doing dinner at Di Millos.
We'll have an early flight that morning...leaving STL around 5:30 AM arriving PWM 11 AM. We may have time to rest up but may be tired after a travel day so I'm thinking we won't want to be an hour away from our hotel at sunset.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
It sounds like you have a great plan already for your Portland trip! Portland Head Light at sunrise is a fantastic choice—it’s one of the most iconic spots in the area. For sunset, you’ve got several great options, though it’s understandable that you might not want to venture too far from your hotel. Here are some ideas for sunset photography in and around Portland:
1. Portland Head Light (again): If you’re already heading to Portland Head Light in the morning, it could be worth going back for sunset as well. The light on the lighthouse is stunning at different times of the day, and you can capture the changing colors of the sky, water, and surrounding landscape. If you have the energy and the time, this is a perfect spot to catch the evening light reflecting off the ocean.
2. Sunset at Eastern Promenade: This area is very close to downtown Portland and offers some of the best views of Casco Bay. The Eastern Promenade Park overlooks the water, providing a peaceful setting for sunset. It’s a relatively short drive from your hotel and would be a great option if you’re looking for a location that’s both close and scenic. Plus, it offers plenty of space to spread out and capture the golden hour light.
3. Back Cove: Another close option, Back Cove offers beautiful views with the Portland skyline in the background. You can photograph the sunset across the water with a reflection of the sky in the cove. The spot is located just a few minutes from the Marriott near the airport, so it’s a convenient option if you're feeling a bit tired after travel.
4. Willard Beach: If you’re up for a bit of a drive (maybe 15 minutes from the airport area), Willard Beach in South Portland is a beautiful spot for sunset photography. It’s quieter than some of the more touristy spots and gives you a great view of the water, especially with the Maine coastline in the background. You might also get some interesting shots of the Portland skyline from this angle.
5. Sunset at DiMillo’s (or nearby): Since you’re planning to have dinner at DiMillo’s, which is on the waterfront, you might want to take advantage of the views from there. While it’s not a traditional “photography” spot, you could capture the sunset from their deck or nearby areas. The waterfront setting could provide a lovely backdrop for your shots, and you won’t have to go far after your meal.
6. Bug Light Park: This smaller, more tranquil park in South Portland is a great place for sunset shots, especially if you like photographing lighthouses. The Bug Light is a picturesque lighthouse at the end of the park, and it’s less crowded than Portland Head Light. It’s a 10-15 minute drive from the Marriott, so it's not far from your hotel and offers a nice quiet spot for some peaceful sunset photos.
Based on your plans, I’d suggest focusing on spots like the Eastern Promenade, Back Cove, or DiMillo’s area for a relaxing evening with great views that aren’t too far from your hotel. Portland Head Light can be a great spot for sunset too, but it might require a little more effort to get there after your travel day. If you're aiming for convenience, I’d recommend one of the closer spots for a more relaxed experience.
Enjoy your time in Portland, and I hope you get some amazing sunset shots!
