It sounds like you're planning an exciting family vacation to Honolulu, and you've got plenty of time to enjoy all that Oahu has to offer! Here are some recommendations on hotels, activities, and general tips for your trip.

Regarding hotels, here are a few great options that are family-friendly, offer excellent amenities, and have great pools for your niece:

  • Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach: This beautiful resort is right across from Waikiki Beach and offers a fantastic pool with a view. They have spacious rooms and are known for their family-friendly atmosphere. There’s also a great beach just steps away, perfect for relaxing or enjoying water activities.
  • Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort: Located directly on Waikiki Beach, this resort has a lovely pool area, along with a laid-back, tropical vibe. It’s great for families and has several dining options on-site, as well as easy access to shopping and the beach.
  • The Royal Hawaiian: This iconic pink hotel on Waikiki Beach is a great choice for families who want a luxurious experience with plenty of beachfront space. The resort has a fantastic pool and offers various kid-friendly activities. It's also close to the main attractions and restaurants in Waikiki.
  • Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort: This massive resort offers a lot of space for families, with multiple pools, waterslides, and beachfront activities. It’s located slightly away from the main Waikiki area, which gives you a quieter setting while still being close to attractions.
  • Kaimana Beach Hotel: A more laid-back option with a quiet, family-friendly vibe and a pool that overlooks the ocean. It’s located on the quieter end of Waikiki Beach, so you get a peaceful atmosphere while still being close to everything.

As for your question about spending 8 days in Honolulu—honestly, 8 days can be a great amount of time if you plan to explore the island and not just stay in Waikiki. The island has a lot to offer, and with a car rental, you'll have the flexibility to see more than just the main tourist areas. Here are some suggestions on how to fill your days:

  • Beaches: Spend time on Waikiki Beach, and check out quieter spots like Lanikai Beach or Kailua Beach. You can also try snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, which is a protected marine area with incredible wildlife.
  • Diamond Head Crater: A short hike up to the top offers panoramic views of Honolulu and the coast. It's a fun and easy hike, and your niece might enjoy the challenge!
  • Explore North Shore: The North Shore is famous for its massive waves in winter, but it's also a great place to visit year-round. You can drive up and enjoy the laid-back vibe, beaches, and local food trucks.
  • Visit Pearl Harbor: If you're interested in history, Pearl Harbor is a must-see. The Arizona Memorial and the museum are moving and educational, and it's a great family outing.
  • Polynesian Cultural Center: A family-friendly cultural attraction on the North Shore that’s great for learning about Hawaiian and Polynesian culture. They also have a luau in the evening.
  • Hike to Manoa Falls: A beautiful hike through a rainforest to a stunning waterfall. This is a moderate hike, perfect for families who enjoy nature without it being too strenuous.
  • Shopping and Dining: Explore the shops and eateries around Waikiki. The Ala Moana Center, the world’s largest open-air shopping mall, has great stores and dining options. You can also explore local markets for souvenirs and fresh produce.

In terms of transport, renting a car is a great idea for exploring Oahu beyond the main tourist areas. However, Honolulu has a public transportation system, TheBus, that can get you around most places, including to popular spots like Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, and Hanauma Bay. If you prefer to avoid parking or traffic, consider using ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft for trips around the city.

Enjoy your time in Honolulu! It’s a beautiful destination with lots to offer for all ages, and eight days should give you enough time to experience both the relaxation of the beaches and the adventure of exploring the island.
