Ferry Service Suspended by Ice

Arnold Transit has suspended ferry service to & from Mackinac Island until ice conditions allow for safe passage. They have been running the Straits of Mackinac II instead of the Mighty Huron and the Straits is single hull instead of double. The Huron is still having long deferred work done on it at this time.

Arnold Freight's The Senator can do better in ice than the Straits and made the last trip off the Island today at 2PM.

I don't think this is the end of service for the winter. You never know until it happens, but this would be much earlier than in recent years.

Air service is available from St. Ignace.

The suspension of ferry service to and from Mackinac Island due to ice conditions is certainly a significant event for those planning to travel to or from the island. Arnold Transit has been running the Straits of Mackinac II instead of the Mighty Huron due to ice, but as you've mentioned, this boat is single-hull, making it less suited for ice conditions. The Mighty Huron is undergoing long-overdue maintenance, which has contributed to the current situation. Fortunately, Arnold Freight’s The Senator, which is better equipped for icy conditions, was able to make the last trip off the island at 2 PM today.

This early suspension is unusual, as ferry service typically continues longer into winter, but it’s hard to predict how long the ice will remain a factor. It’s always a challenge to determine when ferry service will be fully resumed. Historically, service is only completely halted during severe ice conditions, but the Straits of Mackinac can freeze earlier than expected some years.

For those who still need to get to Mackinac Island, air service from St. Ignace remains available. This could be a more reliable option for travelers while the ice conditions persist. Be sure to check with the local air carriers for availability and schedules, as they may vary based on demand and weather conditions.

Some suggestions for those planning trips to Mackinac Island during winter or spring when ice conditions can be unpredictable:

  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts: Since ice conditions change rapidly, it's wise to stay updated on weather conditions and ferry schedules before traveling.
  • Consider alternative transportation: If you’re planning a trip during winter or early spring, air service from St. Ignace may be your best bet until ferry service resumes.
  • Plan for delays: If you’re set on taking the ferry, be flexible with your travel plans and allow for extra time, as service can be delayed or interrupted due to weather.

While the suspension of ferry service may be inconvenient, the beauty of Mackinac Island during the winter months is still worth experiencing if you can manage to get there! Stay patient and check regularly for updates from Arnold Transit and other local providers.
