What to do and see???

First time to NOLA. We will be there for 4 nights. Looking to plan itinerary (sites and activities) and find great places to eat so we can make reservations. We are hoping to stay in the french quarter or the NOPSI (have a great package but some say it is not walking distance). We are narrowing that down now. Appreciate your suggestions-thanks in advance!

New Orleans (NOLA) is an exciting city with a rich cultural heritage, lively music scene, and amazing food. For your 4-night stay, here’s a suggested itinerary for what to do, see, and eat, along with recommendations for where to stay.

If you're staying in the French Quarter or the NOPSI Hotel, you'll be in a prime location for exploring the city. The French Quarter is the heart of New Orleans, offering iconic attractions and the vibrant atmosphere NOLA is known for. While the NOPSI hotel is a bit farther from the French Quarter, it's still within walking distance (about a 15-minute walk) or a short cab ride away.

Here are some of the must-see attractions and activities:

  • French Quarter: Wander through the historic streets of the French Quarter, including the famous Bourbon Street for nightlife and Jackson Square to see street artists and musicians.
  • St. Louis Cathedral: The iconic cathedral located in Jackson Square, known for its stunning architecture.
  • Garden District: A picturesque neighborhood full of historic mansions, gardens, and oak-lined streets. It's a great area to walk or take a guided tour.
  • Mardi Gras World: Visit this unique attraction to see where the famous Mardi Gras floats are made and learn about the history of the festival.
  • Audubon Park and Zoo: Take a relaxing walk through Audubon Park and, if you're interested, visit the Audubon Zoo to see a wide range of animals.
  • National WWII Museum: One of the most visited museums in the U.S., offering powerful exhibits on the history of World War II.

For food, New Orleans is a paradise for food lovers. Be sure to try these iconic dishes and restaurants:

  • Po’boys: Head to Johnny’s Po-Boys for a classic New Orleans sandwich filled with fried shrimp, oysters, or roast beef.
  • Gumbo: Try Commander's Palace or Mother's Restaurant for delicious gumbo, a signature dish in New Orleans.
  • Beignets: Stop by Café du Monde for an iconic NOLA dessert — these powdered sugar-covered treats are a must-try.
  • Jambalaya: House of Blues or Louisiana Cookery offer great jambalaya to taste the local flavors.
  • Seafood: For fresh seafood, head to Acme Oyster House for oysters, crawfish, and other Gulf Coast specialties.
  • Breakfast: Start your day with a classic New Orleans breakfast at Elizabeth’s, known for their eggs benedict and praline bacon.

For evening entertainment, NOLA is known for its live music scene. You can catch jazz performances at places like The Spotted Cat Music Club or Preservation Hall, both located in the French Quarter. Don’t forget to check out the nightlife on Bourbon Street for bars, clubs, and live performances.

Lastly, if you have time, consider taking a riverboat cruise along the Mississippi River for beautiful views of the city and a taste of NOLA’s history.
