Fenway Park on marathon day

Hi, we are coming to Boston at Easter & will be there on marathon day (21st April). We’d like to go to a baseball game whilst we are there. How easy is it to get around when the marathon is on, is it worth trying for the Patriot Days game? We are staying at the Aloft in Seaport thanks

It sounds like you have an exciting trip planned to Boston! Attending a baseball game on marathon day is definitely an interesting experience, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

Getting Around on Marathon Day (April 21st)

The Boston Marathon is a huge event, and it will definitely affect the city's transportation system, especially along the marathon route. Some roads will be closed, and there will be detours in place. However, public transportation, especially the subway (MBTA), will still be operational, though it can get crowded at times due to spectators and participants.

If you’re staying at the Aloft in Seaport, you will be a bit farther from Fenway Park, but still within reasonable distance to take the subway. The best option would be to take the Silver Line from Seaport to South Station and then hop onto the Red Line toward Alewife. You’ll get off at Kenmore Station, which is right next to Fenway Park. Just make sure to leave a bit earlier to account for potential delays due to road closures.

Is It Worth Going to the Patriot's Day Game?

The Boston Red Sox typically play on Patriots' Day, which is also Marathon Monday. It’s a very exciting and energetic atmosphere at Fenway Park, with a large crowd, and the game often starts in the late morning to accommodate the marathon. The game is a tradition for many locals, and the crowd will likely be in high spirits.

However, if you are planning to head to Fenway Park during the marathon, be prepared for large crowds and potential delays, especially as people gather to watch the marathon or celebrate along the route. It’s a fun event, but it might be busier than usual, and navigating around the marathon crowds can be challenging.

Tips for Marathon Day and the Game:

  • Leave Early: Expect delays, so plan to arrive at Fenway Park early. It’s a good idea to leave at least an hour or more ahead of time to ensure you don’t miss any part of the game.
  • Consider the T (Subway): The MBTA subway system is your best option for getting to Fenway from Seaport. The Silver Line (from Seaport) to South Station, and then the Red Line to Kenmore is a straightforward route, but it may be crowded.
  • Check Marathon Route Closures: If you’re traveling by car, check the marathon route for closures and plan your route accordingly. Some streets will be closed off, so having a backup plan (like public transportation) is essential.
  • Fenway Park Experience: The atmosphere at the game will be unique because of the marathon. If you're up for it, it can be a fun day to enjoy the game and the city’s energy, but it will be busier than usual.

Alternative Option: If you’re not keen on dealing with the marathon crowds, you might consider watching the game at a nearby sports bar or venue where you can enjoy the action without the extra hustle of getting to Fenway. There are plenty of places around the Seaport and Fenway area with great viewing options.

Final Thoughts: The combination of the Boston Marathon and a Red Sox game on the same day is definitely a unique experience, but be prepared for extra crowds and potential delays. If you're up for the adventure and plan ahead, it can be a lot of fun!
