I've looked at the NPS page for Acadia, as well as the Recreation.gov site for Cadillac Mtn but still have some questions and also just some opinion solicitation as well:
1) I know it says 30% of tickets go on sale 90 days out - does that mean literally 3 months out, like if I want a ticket for July 23, it would go on sale April 23, or is there a system where they say "30% of July tickets go on sale April 1?" I wasn't able to find this answer on either site
2) Just verifying - when they say you can buy one daytime pass per vehicle per day, I could ostensibly reserve a daytime pass for every single day of our visit if I wanted to in order to (hopefully) ensure we get good weather for at least one visit, correct? And then I could cancel the day 48 hours before if I didn't feel we would use it for a certain day?
3) If we wanted to do sunset on the mountain, I didn't see a separate sunset system, so it would just be considered a daytime pass, correct?
4) Are there any other good places to watch sunrise from Bar Harbor if we didn't get a sunrise pass for the mountain? I am considering trying for one but being limited to only one pass per week, I feel like chances are high you may end up fogged out or with cloudy conditions the morning of your reservation. Do most people try and wait to buy sunrise passes the 48 hours before in order to have a better look at the weather? Buying 90 days out is such a crapshoot and then you have wasted your one weekly pass if it ends up being not great weather. So if we miss out on a sunrise ticket or the weather is bad, are there other recommended areas to watch sunrise on better weather days?
Any other tips for Cadillac Mtn? We are not up for the hike up it, so we will be limited to a vehicle pass.
It sounds like you have a lot of great questions about your upcoming visit to Acadia and Cadillac Mountain! I'll address each one of your points in detail below:
1) 30% of tickets on sale 90 days in advance:
The 30% of tickets that go on sale 90 days ahead do indeed follow a 3-month window. If you’re looking for a ticket for July 23, tickets will go on sale exactly 90 days before, which would be April 23. So, you can expect a specific day’s tickets to go on sale exactly three months prior to that date, not in a bulk batch for the whole month of July on a single date. It's very precise and follows that 90-day rule.
2) One daytime pass per vehicle per day:
Yes, you can absolutely reserve one daytime pass per vehicle for every day you plan to visit, but it's important to note that each pass is for a specific day. So if you're planning on being there for several days, you can reserve a pass for each of those days, assuming availability. And yes, you can cancel up to 48 hours before the scheduled time without penalty. This flexibility can allow you to adjust your reservation based on weather or plans.
3) Sunset on Cadillac Mountain:
For sunset visits, the same daytime pass system applies. There isn’t a separate sunset-specific pass system. So, if you reserve a daytime pass for a particular day, it will cover both the daytime and sunset hours. However, the key here is that the passes are for timed entry, so if you’re planning on staying for sunset, make sure to reserve your pass for the time you would want to be on the mountain. Evening passes do tend to be in higher demand due to sunset views, so it’s good to act fast on availability if that’s your goal!
4) Sunrise alternatives to Cadillac Mountain:
There are several great alternative spots in and around Bar Harbor where you can catch a stunning sunrise if you miss out on a Cadillac Mountain sunrise pass or if the weather doesn’t cooperate:
As for whether to wait until 48 hours before to buy a sunrise pass, it’s a common strategy among visitors to check the forecast as the day approaches. Weather can definitely be unpredictable, and trying to guess conditions three months out for sunrise can be a challenge. If the weather looks poor for a particular day, you can cancel your pass and try for a different morning.

In summary, it’s definitely possible to maximize your experience on Cadillac Mountain with good timing and flexibility.
