Travel from downtown to South side parade
As you see from my previous post we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s day in Chicago. We also want to make it to the South Side parade on Sunday. What’s the best way to get there from downtown?
To get from downtown Chicago to the South Side for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, you have a few transportation options, depending on your preference for convenience, cost, and experience:
- Public Transit (CTA):
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is a convenient and affordable option. You can take the Red Line from downtown (e.g., from the State/Lake station or another nearby station) and head south toward the 95th/Dan Ryan station. The South Side St. Patrick's Day parade typically takes place along Western Avenue, which is a short walk from the 79th Street or 87th Street stations on the Red Line. You can check CTA schedules and stop locations in advance to ensure you’re getting off at the right stop. The CTA is especially good for avoiding traffic during parade times.
- Taxi or Ride-sharing Services (Uber/Lyft):
If you prefer a more direct and comfortable ride, taking a taxi or ride-sharing service (Uber or Lyft) would be the best option. It will take you directly to the parade route, though be aware that traffic can be heavy on St. Patrick’s Day, especially around the parade times. Expect some delays and potentially higher fares due to the crowds and festivities.
- Driving:
If you’re driving, you can take I-90/94 south from downtown and exit at 87th or 79th Street, depending on where you want to park. However, parking can be limited in the South Side during parade day, and street closures may cause some delays. Be prepared to either find street parking (if available) or park in a nearby lot. It's recommended to arrive early if you plan to park close to the parade route.
- Shuttle or Group Transport:
Some local businesses and hotels may offer shuttle services to the parade. If you're with a group or prefer an organized transport method, check with your accommodations or look for shuttle services operating on St. Patrick’s Day.
In summary:
- Public Transit (CTA): Efficient, affordable, and avoids traffic but may require some walking. The Red Line is likely your best bet.
- Taxi/Ride-share: Convenient and direct but expect possible delays due to heavy traffic.
- Driving: Flexible but may involve finding parking and dealing with street closures.
In terms of timing, I’d recommend planning to leave early in the day to avoid the crowds and traffic bottlenecks that can arise closer to parade time. Be prepared for some additional time to find parking or navigate public transit, as the area will be busy.
