Whitefish or Columbia Falls to stay for GNP?

We are traveling with family to Montana for the first time this summer. We want to tour Glacier NP several days, but would like to stay in a location (with a view if possible) close to a town with some restaurants and shops for days that we want to relax. Any recommendations as to which town would be a better home base?
