Limited Access to Kīlauea Point and Overlook

From Ron Wiley:

The Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will be closed now through April 30 to address safety concerns along the trail between the Visitor Center and Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. Crews will stabilize the trail with a west ravine discharge. The Refuge will do its best to reduce the length of the closure to the absolute minimum, but addressing issues that are quickly escalating along the pathway to the Point is critical for the future of public safety and visitation at the Refuge. The Refuge’s Friends group, Kīlauea Point Natural History Association, nature store will also be closed during this time. During the closure, the Overlook at the end of Kīlauea Road will be accessible with staff and docents providing information Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm (except on Federal holidays).

The Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will be closed now through April 30 for safety concerns along the trail between the Visitor Center and the Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. Crews will be working to stabilize the trail with a west ravine discharge, which is essential to address rapidly escalating issues regarding public safety along the pathway.

During this closure, the Refuge’s Friends group, the Kīlauea Point Natural History Association, and the nature store will also be closed. However, the Overlook at the end of Kīlauea Road will remain accessible, and staff and docents will be available to provide information about the area on Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm (except on Federal holidays). This limited access will allow visitors to still enjoy the views from the Overlook, although the full Refuge and trail access will be unavailable until the necessary work is completed.

If you are planning to visit during this closure, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Overlook Access: The Overlook will be open for visitors, offering great views of the surrounding area, though the trail to the lighthouse itself will be closed.
  • Docent Assistance: Staff and docents will be available at the Overlook to provide insights and information about the Refuge, the wildlife, and the ongoing maintenance efforts.
  • Alternative Locations: While the Refuge trail and nature store are closed, there are other beautiful spots on Kauai where you can enjoy scenic views and local wildlife. Consider visiting nearby beaches or other hiking spots in the area, such as the Na Pali Coast or Hanalei Bay.

For the most current updates on the closure or changes to accessibility, it’s recommended to check with the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge's official website or contact the Refuge directly. Thank you for your understanding as the Refuge works to ensure the safety of visitors and the continued preservation of this important site.
