Dungeness

Does the L and L get somewhat close to the Dungeness ruins to be able to see/tour them? Thanks!

The L and L (Lighthouse and Land) tour on Cumberland Island does not directly take you to the Dungeness ruins, but it does bring you relatively close to them. The ruins are located near the middle of the island, and the Lighthouse and Land tour typically covers the northern end of the island, including the Cumberland Island Lighthouse and the surrounding areas. However, the Dungeness ruins are not far from where the L and L tour ends, so you can definitely visit them on your own once you’re off the tour.

  • Tour Proximity: The L and L tour takes you to the Cumberland Island Lighthouse and other historic sites on the northern part of the island, but it does not stop directly at Dungeness. However, the Dungeness ruins are located a short distance from the tour’s endpoint, and it’s easy to walk or bike to them afterward.
  • Getting to Dungeness: To reach the Dungeness ruins from the Lighthouse, you can either walk or bike. The walk is about a 1.5-mile walk from the Lighthouse area, and biking is an option as well, as many visitors rent bikes for easier exploration of the island.
  • Visiting the Ruins: The Dungeness ruins are a must-see on Cumberland Island. These are the remains of the former mansion of Thomas and Lucy Carnegie, and they are set in a beautiful, natural landscape. The ruins are surrounded by large live oak trees, and it’s a peaceful spot to explore.
  • Guided Tours: If you're specifically interested in touring the Dungeness ruins, consider taking one of the ranger-led tours or self-guided tours, which are available from the National Park Service. These tours provide more historical context about the ruins and the island’s history.

In short, while the L and L tour does not take you directly to the Dungeness ruins, it is easy to add a visit to the ruins either before or after the tour by walking or biking. It’s definitely worth making the short journey, as the Dungeness ruins are one of the most iconic and photogenic spots on the island!
