Suggest a challenging hike to book with a guide
I am down the rabbit hole of Yosemite family vacation planning. My husband and I are intermediate to advanced level hikers, our two children are not. They are however active and athletic 11 and 13 year olds who should be able to handle a full day of hiking. :)
We have a number of moderate hikes planned as a family, and I would like to book a guide for something more challenging. Any advice on hikes that would be fun for our entire group and worthy of a tour guide?
Thank you!
Yosemite offers a variety of challenging hikes that are ideal for intermediate to advanced hikers, yet still doable for active kids around 11–13. Booking a guided hike can enhance the experience by providing safety, local knowledge, and insight into the park’s natural and geological history.
Here are some suggestions for challenging hikes that can be fun for the entire family and are worth hiring a guide for:
- Half Dome (cable route): This is the iconic Yosemite hike, 14–16 miles round-trip with significant elevation gain. A guide can help your family navigate the cables safely. Note that permits are required, and your children’s stamina and comfort with heights should be considered. Starting early in the morning is essential.
- Clouds Rest: About 14.5 miles round-trip with panoramic views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the High Sierra. Less crowded than Half Dome, but still challenging. A guide can help manage pacing and share insights on flora, fauna, and geology along the trail.
- Upper Yosemite Falls to Eagle Peak: A steep and strenuous 7–8 mile hike that offers incredible views of Yosemite Valley and surrounding cliffs. Suitable for families who are confident with endurance hikes. A guide can point out hidden viewpoints and ensure safe navigation of steep sections.
- North Dome via Panorama Trail: Around 8–10 miles round-trip with moderate elevation gain. It provides a great vantage of Half Dome and is less crowded than other major trails. Guided tours can make it more educational and help with route-finding.
Tips for guided hikes in Yosemite:
- Book in advance, especially for spring and summer, as guides can fill up quickly.
- Look for certified Yosemite guides or companies that specialize in family-friendly guided hikes.
- Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, hats, and layered clothing as weather can change rapidly.
- Ensure your guide adjusts the hike’s pace to accommodate the children, taking breaks and emphasizing fun along the way.
- Consider half-day or full-day guided hikes depending on your family’s energy and attention span.
These guided hikes will allow you to challenge yourselves while keeping the experience safe, educational, and memorable for the whole family.
