First Visit
My husband and I are visiting for the first time. We are flying in to Bangor from Florida and renting a car. Trying to figure out what a fair amount of time would be for a proper visit and what are the “musts” to do. Thank you all
Welcome to your upcoming visit to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park! Since this is your first time, I’d recommend spending at least 3-4 days in the area to get a proper feel for it. This will allow you to explore the main attractions without feeling too rushed. Of course, if you have more time, there’s always more to discover!
Here are some "must-dos" for your visit:
- Acadia National Park: This is the crown jewel of the area. Drive the Park Loop Road for stunning views, and don't miss Cadillac Mountain, where you can watch the sunrise or sunset. It's one of the best places to see the beauty of the park.
- Jordan Pond: Hike around Jordan Pond or take a leisurely walk along the Jordan Pond Path. You can also enjoy a traditional popover at the Jordan Pond House.
- Bar Harbor: Spend some time in the charming town of Bar Harbor. Wander the shops, take a scenic boat tour, or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many excellent restaurants. Don't miss the Shore Path for a lovely coastal walk.
- Schoodic Peninsula: For a less crowded experience, head to the Schoodic Peninsula. It's a more tranquil part of Acadia National Park, offering stunning views of the coastline and excellent hiking.
- Wild Gardens of Acadia: If you love nature, stop by the Wild Gardens of Acadia at the Sieur de Monts Spring area. It’s a peaceful spot with native plants and educational signage about the local flora.
If you're interested in nature, I’d also recommend:
- Take a scenic boat tour: There are several companies offering scenic tours that can get you up close to nearby islands, lighthouses, and wildlife like puffins.
- Visit a lighthouse: Check out Egg Rock Lighthouse and Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, both iconic Maine lighthouses that are perfect for photos.
If you enjoy hiking, Acadia offers a variety of trails, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. Keep in mind that some of the trails are rocky and steep, so make sure to choose one that fits your comfort level.
For the best experience, I’d recommend going in early June when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are still manageable. Acadia’s popularity increases in the summer, so a little advance planning can help you avoid the busiest times.
Enjoy your trip, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with the natural beauty and charm of Bar Harbor and Acadia!
