Help. Trip with grown adults

Friends heading there. I was there 2 years ago. Can’t remember the name of the touristy area that I read about but never went.

Any other tips?? They plan to do a boat trip. Acadia hikes etc. but want some off the beaten path ideas

It sounds like your friends are heading to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The “touristy area” you’re remembering is likely downtown Bar Harbor itself. This area is popular for shops, restaurants, galleries, and casual strolling along the waterfront, but it can get crowded during peak season.

For grown adults looking for a mix of classic sights and off-the-beaten-path experiences, here are some recommendations:

  • Hiking in Acadia: While Cadillac Mountain is a must for sunrise or sunset, consider less crowded trails like the Beech Hill Preserve in Northeast Harbor or the Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland side of Acadia. Both offer great views and fewer people.
  • Carriage Roads: Rent bikes (regular or e-bikes) and explore Acadia’s carriage roads. They’re scenic, often quieter than hiking trails, and give a different perspective of the park.
  • Boat Trips: Lobster/fishing tours or wildlife cruises are fun, but for something different, consider a small private sailing charter. These often go to quieter coves or outlying islands and allow more personalized experiences.
  • Kayaking: Sea kayaking tours are available around Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor. They can be peaceful and give a great view of the coastline and wildlife.
  • Local Eats Off the Beaten Path: Try Stewman’s Lobster Pound in Southwest Harbor for a more local feel or Beal’s Lobster Pier for a casual waterfront meal.

Other tips:

  • Use the Island Explorer bus system to reach different parts of the park without worrying about parking.
  • Consider visiting the Schoodic Peninsula or Northeast Harbor in the early morning for scenic drives and tranquility.
  • Evening ranger programs or stargazing on Sand Beach can be magical experiences without the crowds.
  • Explore quiet coastal roads like the loop through Seal Harbor and Eagle Lake; these offer beautiful views and minimal traffic.

Overall, balancing some classic sights like Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, and Bar Harbor town with quieter activities and lesser-known spots will give your friends a richer Acadia experience.
