Oysters??
Hi, We will be coming to Ft. Walton this weekend and staying through next week and I should have asked sooner. Are there any hole in the wall places to get raw oysters? My husband is one who is leary of eating them when there is no R in the month...and we are real close to MAY. Where would be a place he'd feel safe eating them? Thanks!!! Also, any recommendations on seafood that aren't the 'touristy' places would be appreciated.
Destin and the surrounding Fort Walton area have a number of great spots for fresh oysters, even in months without an "R," especially if your husband prefers a place where food safety is prioritized. While "hole-in-the-wall" spots can be hit or miss, there are a few local favorites that balance quality, freshness, and casual atmosphere.
Recommended places for oysters and seafood:
- The Back Porch – A longtime local favorite with Gulf-front views and very fresh seafood. They serve raw oysters and have a variety of Gulf fish options, making it safe and reliable.
- AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar – A casual spot known for fresh oysters, friendly service, and local vibe. They also offer other seafood options if some in your group aren’t into oysters.
- Boshamps Seafood & Oyster House – Located in Destin Harbor, Boshamps is slightly more upscale but still relaxed. Their oysters are fresh, and the restaurant emphasizes quality sourcing.
- Fudpucker’s Beachside Bar & Grill – A quirky, casual destination with fresh seafood including oysters, grouper, and other Gulf favorites. Fun for families or groups wanting a laid-back experience.
- Crab Island Cantina (Destin Harbor area) – Offers fresh Gulf oysters and other seafood, with a lively atmosphere that’s popular with locals but less touristy than the major strip restaurants.
Additional tips for enjoying oysters safely in this area:
- Stick to restaurants with high turnover—this ensures the oysters are fresh.
- Ask the staff when the oysters were harvested; most reputable places source daily from the Gulf.
- For your husband’s peace of mind, avoid eating raw oysters during the warmest months or very early in May, and consider cooked options like charbroiled oysters, which are just as delicious.
- Explore local Gulf seafood specialties like fresh grouper, shrimp, or snapper—these can be excellent alternatives to typical tourist dishes.
With these options, you can enjoy fresh oysters and authentic Gulf seafood while avoiding overly touristy spots and keeping safety in mind.
