Dry Tortugas and sandbar trip?

We are taking a trip to Dry Tortugas via the ferry during our mid-June trip. If we do this, would you also recommend taking an additional sandbar trip on another day? We will be splitting our time between Islamorada and Key West, so if we did a sandbar trip, it would be during our time in the upper keys. Thanks!

Visiting the Dry Tortugas via ferry is a fantastic day trip and offers a unique historical and natural experience. You’ll get to explore Fort Jefferson, snorkel in pristine waters, and enjoy the remote island environment. Since this trip is already full-day and involves travel from Key West, whether to add a sandbar trip depends on how much additional boating and sun exposure you want.

Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

  • Sandbar trips in the Upper Keys: These trips are generally shorter than the Dry Tortugas ferry, usually half to full-day, and involve shallow waters where you can wade, swim, or relax on the sandbar. They are great for socializing, wildlife viewing (birds, fish), and easy beach-style experiences without full snorkeling or diving.
  • Timing: Since you’re splitting time between Islamorada and Key West, doing a sandbar trip while in the Upper Keys is logistically easier. Islamorada has several operators offering calm, accessible sandbar experiences, often with boats designed for easy boarding and minimal effort.
  • Weather and heat: June can be hot with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so consider morning trips to avoid the heat and rougher seas.
  • Experience difference: The Dry Tortugas offers history, seclusion, and snorkeling, while sandbar trips focus on shallow water fun and relaxing in a unique setting. Doing both gives you complementary experiences rather than redundancy.

Recommendations if you decide to do both:

  • Book the Dry Tortugas ferry in advance as it fills up quickly. Arrive early to maximize time on the island and in the water.
  • For sandbar trips, choose an operator in Islamorada with a shallow-draft boat and easy access for older passengers if needed. Morning departures are ideal.
  • Pack sunscreen, hats, water, and light snacks for both trips. Dry Tortugas ferry provides meals, but sandbar trips often do not.
  • Consider the pace: doing both trips gives you a great mix of adventure and relaxation, but you may want a light day after the Dry Tortugas due to early start and long day.

Overall, if you enjoy boating, shallow-water relaxation, and seeing wildlife, adding a sandbar trip while in the Upper Keys is highly recommended. It complements the Dry Tortugas day and provides a different perspective on Florida Keys’ waters.
