Uber vs private driver

Hello! We are traveling to St.Helena in June. We are have our vineyards selected, but we are trying to decide on transportation. We are thinking about a few possibilities.

1. Hiring a private driver

2. Using uber/lyft to get around

Does anyone have any suggestions on what is better? Since we don’t need guidance on vineyards, I’m not sure if a private driver is necessary? It looks like in previous reviews uber is pretty reliable.

If we do go the driver route, are there any companies you recommend?

When deciding between Uber/Lyft and a private driver for a trip to St. Helena in Napa Valley, it mainly depends on convenience, cost, and how structured you want your day to be.

Using Uber or Lyft:

  • Pros: You can hail rides as needed, which is flexible if your vineyard visits are spaced out or you want to adjust plans spontaneously. Pricing can be reasonable if you’re only visiting a few vineyards in a day. No need to pre-book for the whole day.
  • Cons: During busy weekends or peak tourist season in Napa, wait times for rides can be longer. Some rural areas may have fewer drivers available. You might need to carry luggage or purchases yourself between vineyards.

Hiring a private driver:

  • Pros: Provides a stress-free, seamless experience, especially if you plan multiple vineyard stops or have specific timing in mind. The driver can handle logistics, and you won’t worry about waiting for rides. Good for groups, as costs can be split. Some drivers also offer local tips and can navigate the best routes efficiently.
  • Cons: More expensive than using rideshare. You need to book in advance. Since you don’t need guided tours, you might not use all the potential value a private driver offers.

Recommended private driver companies in Napa/St. Helena area:

  • Napa Valley Wine Country Tours – reliable for customized itineraries and small groups.
  • Beau Wine Tours – professional drivers with flexible scheduling for private groups.
  • Pure Luxury Transportation Napa Valley – well-reviewed for private transportation with attention to comfort and timing.

Bottom line: If you prefer flexibility, are visiting fewer vineyards, and are comfortable with rideshare, Uber/Lyft is sufficient. If you want a stress-free day with multiple stops, no waiting for cars, and a more relaxed experience, a private driver is worth the extra cost.
