ORD Questions

I haven't been through ORD for many years. I have an upcoming domestic flight (United) which arrives at Terminal 2. I then connect to an international flight leaving from Terminal 5. So my questions are: How do I get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5 ? How long will this take ? Will I have to pass through TSA security again ?

To get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5 at O'Hare International Airport (ORD), you will need to use the airport’s airport transit system called the Airport Transit System (ATS). The system consists of a series of shuttles that transport passengers between terminals, including the remote terminals like Terminal 5, which is used for international flights.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • How to Get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5:

After you arrive at Terminal 2, follow the signs to the Airport Transit System (ATS). The shuttle will take you directly to Terminal 5, where your international flight departs. The ATS is free and is located within the airport terminals, so it’s easy to find. Simply follow the signs that indicate the direction of the shuttle and you’ll be there in no time.

  • How Long Will It Take?

The ride on the ATS typically takes around 5-7 minutes, depending on the time of day and any potential delays. The frequency of the shuttle is approximately every 5 minutes, so you shouldn’t have to wait long for the next train. However, allow yourself a bit of extra time for potential crowds, especially if your flights are during peak hours.

  • Will I Have to Pass Through TSA Security Again?

Yes, you will need to go through TSA security again when transferring to Terminal 5. The terminals are not connected behind security, so you will exit security after arriving at Terminal 2 and go through security again at Terminal 5 before your international flight. This means you’ll need to allow time for re-checking your bags, passing through TSA, and any other potential delays. It’s recommended that you allow at least 90 minutes between your domestic arrival and international departure to account for security and potential lines.

Tips:

  • Check for signs or ask an airport staff member to direct you to the Airport Transit System (ATS) platform, as there are several different pathways within the airport.
  • If you have tight connections, consider using expedited security services, if available, for your international flight. United and other airlines sometimes offer expedited screening for certain passengers.
  • Be mindful of peak travel times, which can cause longer waits at security checkpoints.

Conclusion:

Getting from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5 at O'Hare is easy, thanks to the free Airport Transit System. Just be sure to allow enough time for the shuttle ride and to go through security at Terminal 5 before your international flight. Safe travels!
