What to do for 5 hrs at ORD
In late October we have a 5 hour connection to an International AA flight to Europe from ORD. I have been through ORD 80:times but never with a 5 h out connection. Any suggestions on how to fill the time?
One idea is to get some exercise and walk pass all the other gates without leaving security.
With a 5-hour connection at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), you have a good amount of time to relax, explore the terminals, and even stretch your legs. Since your international flight is departing from a secure area, your options without leaving security are somewhat limited to what is accessible past the checkpoints, but there are plenty of ways to make the time enjoyable.
Here are some ideas for spending 5 hours at ORD:
- Walk and explore the terminals: ORD is a very large airport, and walking from gate to gate can be a great way to stretch your legs. Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 5 all have long concourses with art displays, shops, and seating areas. Walking several miles around the terminals can also serve as light exercise.
- Airport lounges: If you have access via American Airlines Admirals Club, Priority Pass, or another lounge membership, you can relax, have a snack, get Wi-Fi, and even freshen up in comfortable seating areas.
- Dining: ORD has a variety of restaurants within security, including sit-down options and grab-and-go. Popular choices include Garrett Popcorn, Tortas Frontera by Rick Bayless, and big-name chain restaurants. Dining can be a way to enjoy local flavors and take a break from walking.
- Airport art and exhibits: O’Hare has rotating art installations and permanent exhibits throughout the terminals. It can be fun to walk around and explore these cultural displays.
- Shopping: Terminal shopping includes luxury brands, local Chicago gifts, books, and travel essentials. Even if you don’t plan to buy much, browsing can help pass the time.
If you are considering leaving security for a short trip outside the airport, be cautious:
- With only 5 hours and international departure, going outside may be risky due to traffic, security lines, and passport control for your next flight.
- Sticking inside security ensures you have ample time to board without stress.
Other tips:
- Use the airport’s terminal map to plan a walking route that allows you to see most concourses and amenities efficiently.
- Consider bringing a book, tablet, or laptop for entertainment while resting at a gate or lounge.
- Check if any gates have charging stations to plug in devices while walking or relaxing.
In summary, for a 5-hour connection at ORD, the best approach is to combine light walking through the terminals, lounge access if possible, some dining, and exploring shops and exhibits. This allows you to pass the time productively without risking your international connection.
