New Year in the Keys

Hi all, we're a family of 3, 2 adults and a teen, coming over from the 28th December from the UK flying to Miami then driving to the Keys. It's my 50th birthday on New year's eve so we're planning the trip around that! I know it's not the best time to travel but can't move my birthday 🤣any tips on somewhere to stay over Nye by a lovely beach with restaurants near by. We don't fancy Key West on Nye well head there after new year. We we're thinking of a sunset cruise on my birthday. Any ideas would be great as we've never been to Florida before and can't wait! Thanks

Spending New Year's in the Florida Keys is a wonderful idea, especially for a birthday celebration! Late December is peak season in the Keys, so booking accommodations early is highly recommended. Since you want to avoid Key West for NYE but still be near a beautiful beach with restaurants, consider staying in the Upper or Middle Keys.

Recommended Areas to Stay Over NYE:

  • Islamorada: Known as the "Sportfishing Capital of the World," Islamorada has beautiful beaches, upscale resorts, and a laid-back vibe. Many resorts offer on-site dining, and there are local seafood restaurants within walking distance or a short drive.
  • Marathon: Central Keys location, with lovely Gulf and Ocean views. Plenty of resorts and vacation rentals offer easy beach access and nearby dining options. Marathon is quieter than Key West for NYE but still lively.
  • Long Key / Bahia Honda area: Slightly more secluded, perfect if you want a quieter, scenic beach stay. Fewer restaurants, but the sunsets are spectacular, ideal for a memorable birthday celebration.

Hotel & Resort Options:

  • Cheeca Lodge & Spa, Islamorada: Upscale resort with beachfront access, large pool, spa, and multiple restaurants. Great for a birthday weekend with easy access to dining and activities.
  • Tranquility Bay Beach House Resort, Marathon: Beachfront condos with private balconies, excellent views, and nearby restaurants. Offers a more relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Islander Resort, Islamorada: Beachfront resort with water sports, pool, and on-site dining. Convenient for sunset cruises and exploring local restaurants.

Birthday / New Year’s Eve Activities:

For a memorable birthday and New Year’s Eve celebration:

  • Book a sunset cruise for your birthday: Many operators run private or small-group cruises around Islamorada or Marathon, perfect for your family. Booking early is essential for availability over the holiday period.
  • Reserve dinner in advance: Even if you avoid Key West, restaurants in Islamorada and Marathon can get busy over NYE. Consider resorts with on-site dining or well-reviewed local seafood spots.
  • Explore nearby beaches during the day: Bahia Honda State Park and Sombrero Beach are excellent options for scenic walks and relaxing family time.
  • Optional excursions: Snorkeling, paddleboarding, or visiting the Turtle Hospital in Marathon can be fun family-friendly activities.

Tips:

  • Book accommodations and sunset cruise as soon as possible since NYE is extremely popular in the Keys.
  • Consider staying a night or two in Marathon or Islamorada before heading down to Key West after New Year for more dining, shopping, and sightseeing options.
  • Traffic can be heavy around NYE, especially near Key West, so plan driving times accordingly.

Overall, Islamorada and Marathon offer the perfect combination of beach, restaurants, and family-friendly activities for your birthday and New Year’s Eve, without the Key West crowds. Early booking and reservations will ensure a smooth and memorable celebration!
