My grandmother recently from my family's town to live with family a little northwest of Atlanta and we have missed seeing her. She suggested we plan a trip to spend a weekend "up in the mountains somewhere". This trip would include my grandmother (early 80s), my mother (68), myself and my husband (late 30s) and our 4 year old son. The broad category of mountains north of Atlanta could include anywhere from north Alabama to Chattanooga to places like Helen, Blue Ridge, Elijay, or potentially as far north as Gatlinburg (though even that might be a bit of a stretch on how long my grandmother can handle being in a car). With our broad spread of ages and somewhat limited mobility, I'm just looking for recommendations on where we could all have a good time.
I would also mention that my husband and I will be doing all the driving and neither of us especially love driving twisty mountain roads. I recognize that's impossible to avoid given our potential destinations, but anywhere near large highways/minimal twisty roads would be preferred.
It sounds like you're planning a lovely family trip to the mountains, and it’s great that you’re considering your grandmother’s comfort, as well as the needs of everyone in the group. There are several fantastic destinations north of Atlanta that would be accessible, scenic, and enjoyable for a family of your mix of ages. Here are a few suggestions that balance beautiful mountain scenery, ease of access (avoiding too many twisty roads), and fun activities for all ages:
1. Blue Ridge, GA – Blue Ridge is a charming small town in the North Georgia mountains, and it’s a perfect choice for a family weekend getaway. It’s relatively easy to reach from Atlanta, with a direct drive on highways that are not too twisty. The town offers a variety of activities for all ages:
2. Helen, GA – Helen is a Bavarian-style village in the North Georgia mountains and can offer a fun, unique experience. It's a popular destination, but it's also very accessible from major highways. Helen offers a variety of family-friendly activities:
3. Chattanooga, TN – If you're willing to drive a bit further, Chattanooga could be an excellent option for a family trip. It’s a bit more urban than some of the smaller mountain towns, but it still has a lovely mountain setting, and it’s accessible via major highways. Some highlights of Chattanooga include:
4. Ellijay, GA – Ellijay is another great option, especially for a relaxing mountain getaway with plenty of charm. It's a quieter, smaller town than Blue Ridge or Helen, but still offers beautiful surroundings and some nice activities:
5. Gatlinburg, TN – If you’re willing to drive a bit further (approximately 3-4 hours from Atlanta), Gatlinburg offers a lot of family-friendly activities and is a popular mountain getaway. It can be a bit touristy, but there are many indoor options as well:
6. Near Highway Accessibility: If you're looking for destinations with minimal twisty roads, I would suggest focusing on places like Chattanooga, which is accessible via Interstate 75, or Blue Ridge, which is easily reachable via U.S. Highway 515. These options will allow for more straightforward driving, especially if you want to avoid very winding mountain roads.
All of these destinations offer a mix of indoor and accessible outdoor activities, so your family can enjoy the beauty of the mountains without being limited by mobility issues. Whether you prefer a more relaxing time in a small town like Blue Ridge or a slightly more adventurous weekend in Gatlinburg, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Have a wonderful trip and a great time with your grandmother!
