Honor boxes on north shore
I thought I had the locations of the honor boxes, north shore! I love the idea, and already have found one on the Kilauea detour and for flowers near princeville. Love that? If anyone reads this and wants to tell us again.. thank you. Think we found some last year near Molooa on the Maura side, eggs and bananas!!
Honor boxes on Kauai’s north shore are a charming way to pick up fresh local produce, flowers, eggs, and even baked goods directly from farms. These “take what you need, leave what you can” stands are scattered along the main roads and in some residential areas, often with hand-written signs and a simple box or basket for payment.
Some common spots where visitors and locals alike have found honor boxes include:
- Kilauea area: You mentioned already finding one here; this is a reliable area for flowers, fresh produce, and sometimes honey.
- Princeville/Princeville Road detours: Look for flowers and small produce boxes along side roads leading off the main highway.
- Molokai/Moloa’a side (Hā’ena direction): Eggs, bananas, and other fresh fruits are sometimes available from roadside boxes on smaller farms.
- Hanalei-Papakolea stretch: A few small farms along the back roads have eggs, tropical fruits, and sometimes jams or baked treats.
- Near Wainiha: There are occasionally roadside boxes with bananas, papayas, and taro products.
Tips for visiting honor boxes:
- Bring small bills and coins to leave the proper amount; it’s based on trust.
- Go early in the morning if possible — produce tends to sell out quickly.
- Check roadside signs carefully; boxes are often tucked off the main highway and easy to miss.
- Respect property — some are on private driveways or farms, so park carefully and only access the boxes from the roadside.
- Ask locals — they often know which farms currently have active boxes, especially for seasonal items like bananas or eggs.
Enjoy the experience! Part of the fun is the hunt and supporting local farmers directly, and it’s a wonderful way to take a little piece of Kauai home.
