Gardens

My granddaughter lives on the island but has never been to any of the gardens....not a 23 y/o idea of fun, I guess. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon but will have Thursday and Friday to see and do things on my own. I love gardens and was wondering which garden is the most interesting? I want to see exotic flowers and butterflies, if possible. If there are water features it's a bonus.

Appreciate all suggestions. I know that some I need to buy a ticket for in advance. I found The Limahuli Garden Self Tour and found there are tickets available both Thurs and Friday. I will have a rental car. Will I have time for more than one garden in one day. I'll have until 3 or so both days until my granddaughter gets off work.

We're doing Waimea Canyon on Saturday or Sunday. She and I are flying home Monday morning. It's my plan to just drive around and see things Thurs and Friday. She'll take me to lots of places but she just knows nothing about any of the gardens on the island.

Thanks so much!

Kauai has several beautiful gardens, each with its own charm, and for someone who loves exotic plants, flowers, butterflies, and water features, a few stand out as must-visits. Since you have two afternoons and a rental car, it’s feasible to see one or possibly two gardens per day, depending on how much time you want to spend soaking in each location.

Top Garden Recommendations:

  • Limahuli Garden & Preserve: Located on the North Shore near Hanalei, Limahuli is a stunning botanical garden set in a lush valley with waterfalls and traditional Hawaiian taro fields. It showcases native plants and Polynesian-introduced species. The self-guided tour is well-marked, and you’ll find beautiful flowers, exotic plants, and often butterflies. This garden is highly recommended and can easily take 2–3 hours to explore fully.
  • Allerton Garden: Near Poipu on the south shore, Allerton is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. It features formal gardens, water features, sculptures, and dramatic tree canopies. A guided tour is required, which typically lasts about 1.5–2 hours, so plan your timing. You’ll see exotic flowers, tropical palms, and some birdlife.
  • McBryde Garden: Adjacent to Allerton, McBryde focuses more on plant conservation, with large collections of tropical plants. You can sometimes combine a visit with Allerton if time allows, but it’s more academic and less scenic than Allerton in terms of water features and flower displays.
  • Kauai Plantation Railway & Botanical Walk: Located near Lihue, this is more casual but has a nice mix of tropical plants and flowers. It’s less formal than the other gardens but can be a quick visit if you’re passing through the area.

Suggested Schedule:

  • Thursday Afternoon: If you’re on the North Shore, Limahuli Garden is ideal. Arrive early to allow plenty of time for the self-guided tour and photography.
  • Friday Afternoon: Head to the South Shore and do the Allerton Garden tour. If you finish early, you can walk the adjacent McBryde trails briefly.

With this plan, you’ll get a nice mix of the dramatic North Shore valley gardens and the more curated South Shore gardens with sculptures, fountains, and formal layouts. Each garden offers exotic flowers and plants, and Limahuli particularly is known for its native Hawaiian flora and butterflies. Water features are present at both Limahuli (natural waterfalls) and Allerton (ornamental water features), so you’ll get that bonus as well.

Since you’ll have your own car, travel between gardens is straightforward. North to South travel takes roughly 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic, so keeping one garden per afternoon allows a relaxed pace.
