Manatee

Hi!

My husband and I will be there soon to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. I have gotten so many great recommendations just buy reading these posts and we are super excited for our trip.

I was wondering if there are any certain spots we should check out to try and see Manatee? Thanks

Congratulations on your 30th anniversary! Key West and the surrounding Florida Keys offer some wonderful opportunities to see manatees in their natural habitat. These gentle creatures are most commonly spotted in the warmer months when they move into shallower waters and near freshwater sources.

Here are some of the best spots and ways to see manatees around Key West and the nearby areas:

  • Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary: The sanctuary waters are home to manatees, and boat tours or kayak trips in calm, shallow areas increase your chances of spotting them.
  • Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (Islamorada): This interactive facility offers opportunities to see manatees up close in a controlled environment, which is great if you want a guaranteed sighting.
  • Blue Hole (Big Pine Key): This freshwater pond is a natural manatee hangout, especially in the cooler months when they seek warmer waters. Visiting early in the morning can improve your chances of sightings.
  • Tarpon Creek and nearby canals: Many of the canals and inlets in the Lower Keys are frequented by manatees. Quiet observation from the shore or a small boat works best.
  • Guided Eco or Kayak Tours: Several companies in Key West and the Upper Keys run guided tours specifically focused on wildlife spotting, including manatees. These tours provide both a higher likelihood of sightings and educational insights.

Some additional tips to increase your chances of seeing manatees:

  • Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when manatees are more active.
  • Look for shallow, calm waters near seagrass beds; manatees often feed there.
  • Be patient and quiet—manatees are sensitive to noise and may swim away if startled.
  • Snorkeling or paddling in designated areas can give you a closer encounter without disturbing them.

Remember to respect their space. Federal and state laws protect manatees, so avoid touching or chasing them. Just observing from a safe distance is the best way to enjoy these gentle giants.

Wishing you a magical anniversary trip and plenty of unforgettable wildlife encounters!
