We just used the Sheraton for the second time, plane took off at 11, and really didn't like it. Had to wait for an hour to get a chair with some shade. There were many people who had just left a book and towel and didn't come back for hours. We paid $50 each and sat around trying to find a place in the shade. The pool is very noisy there, and the front desk could not be bothered checking us in. Asked where the towels were, they have them to us last year at the front desk , and the lady pointed in the direction...no one seemed to care that we couldn't get a chair for a couple of house (we had 8 to wait>>). It was kind of miserable, as we had hopes of maybe getting a nap.
Anyone tried the Sonesta/?? Thinking that may be nicer next time. Thank you for your input.
It’s very understandable that your experience at the Sheraton Coconut Beach left you frustrated—day passes can be a great way to enjoy your last day on Kauai, but only if the resort is organized and has enough seating. Many travelers report similar issues at the Sheraton: difficulty finding shaded chairs, noisy pool atmosphere, and inconsistent staffing at check-in. The resort is popular with day-pass users, which means it can feel unusually crowded.
If you’re comparing the Sheraton Coconut Beach with the Sonesta (formerly the Kauai Shores Hotel), the differences are noticeable in atmosphere, layout, and day-pass experience. Below is a detailed breakdown to help you decide whether the Sonesta may offer a better experience next time.

Bottom Line
If your goal is a quiet, shaded spot to relax or nap before a flight, the Sonesta is typically a better choice than the Sheraton Coconut Beach. It offers a calmer environment, easier access to shaded chairs, and friendlier, more attentive staff. Many travelers choose Sonesta specifically because the Sheraton day-pass experience has become too crowded.
