Maui Mike's for surf lessons?

Hi, My 18-year old daughter and I will be in Maui next week and want to take surf lessons. We are staying in Napili. We plan to surf at least 3 days. We'd like to take lessons on day 1. I'm homing in on Maui Mike's and Maui Surfer Girls. I'm leaning toward Maui Mike's because it's closer to Napili and they have surf board pickup and drop off rental. Does anyone have experience with them to share? We'll have a rental - I understand they can provide straps to attach to your car. I'm curious about that too. Is it easy?

Thank you!

If you are staying in Napili and planning to surf for several days, Maui Mike’s Surf School is a solid choice, particularly for first-time surfers or those who want a convenient, hassle-free experience. They are located nearby and are known for their friendly, patient instructors who focus on safety and building confidence in the water.

Here are some points to consider when choosing Maui Mike’s for surf lessons:

  • Proximity: Maui Mike’s is close to Napili, making it easy to get to your lesson quickly, especially on your first day when you may want to start slow and get acclimated.
  • Pick-Up & Drop-Off Service: They offer board delivery and pick-up, which can save time and make transporting boards easier, especially if you have a rental car. They provide straps to secure boards to your car roof, and most guests find it straightforward with basic instructions.
  • Lesson Quality: Lessons typically include a mix of instruction on land and in the water, covering basic paddling, popping up, and reading the waves. The instructors are known for being encouraging and adaptive to all skill levels.
  • Equipment: Maui Mike’s provides soft-top beginner boards and rash guards if needed. For those who plan to surf multiple days, renting from them can simplify logistics since you don’t have to transport boards back and forth each day.
  • Group vs. Private Lessons: They offer both options. A private lesson can be beneficial if it’s your first time or if you want more personalized guidance, whereas small group lessons are more social and often less expensive.

Additional tips for using Maui Mike’s board delivery service:

  • Ensure your car roof is clean and free of debris to prevent scratching the boards.
  • Follow the instructor’s guidance on how to strap boards securely; it’s usually simple and quick once you get the hang of it.
  • Check tides and local surf conditions in advance; Maui Mike’s can often provide recommendations on the best times and locations for beginners each day.

Overall, Maui Mike’s is convenient for Napili visitors, particularly for multi-day surf plans. The combination of nearby location, board rental and delivery, and supportive instruction makes it an excellent choice for both you and your daughter’s first surf experience.
