The ancient city of Xichang is located in the central part of Liangshan Prefecture. It has been an important town in the southwestern border of the motherland since ancient times. Since the Qin and Han Dynasties, successive governments have established counties, prefectures, and government offices here and appointed officials.

Due to favorable conditions such as altitude, temperature, sunshine, longitude and latitude, and the low amount of suspended matter in the atmosphere, the moon appears bright and large, earning Xichang the nickname "Moon City." Furthermore, because the Xichang Satellite Launch Center is located here, Xichang is also known as the "Space City."

Only a few ruins remain of the ancient city of Xichang. This ancient city, with a history of over 2,000 years, occupies only the northeast corner of Xichang. Its three gates are its distinctive landmarks, and Datong Gate is the final remaining trace of the ancient city.
