On the way to Portland

Hi,

So my friend and I are having a few days away next weekend. We'll be driving to Portland from Lawrence on Thursday morning. Are there any cute fun towns that you'd recommend we take a stop in on our way up or any good places for lunch along the way? It's a quick ride and we'll be in no rush so we thought to meander a little.

Thanks!

That sounds like a wonderful trip! The drive from Lawrence to Portland offers plenty of charming towns and scenic spots to explore. Here are a few cute and fun towns you might want to consider stopping in, along with some great places for lunch along the way:

  • Kennebunkport – Just off I-95, Kennebunkport is a perfect place to stretch your legs. This picturesque town is full of beautiful coastal views, quaint shops, and excellent lunch spots. You could stop at The Clam Shack for a quintessential Maine lobster roll or David’s KPT for a more upscale dining experience with views of the water.
  • York – Another beautiful town with coastal charm. York Village has lovely architecture, and if you’re a fan of history, you could check out the Old York Historical Society. For lunch, you could try York Harbor Inn or head to the Goldenrod for a classic Maine ice cream treat after your meal.
  • Ogunquit – Known for its stunning beaches and coastal beauty, Ogunquit is a great stop for a leisurely stroll. The famous Marginal Way offers beautiful ocean views, and the town has plenty of art galleries and boutiques. For lunch, Five-O Restaurant offers a casual spot with excellent seafood and views, or The Lobster Pound for a more laid-back vibe.
  • South Berwick – If you prefer to stay a bit more inland, South Berwick is a charming town with a historic feel. Check out Jenness Farm for some fresh local produce, and if you’re hungry, stop at The Front Porch for a cozy lunch with great sandwiches and comfort food.
  • Biddeford – A bit off the highway, but worth the detour, Biddeford is an up-and-coming town with a cool artsy vibe. You could visit the Biddeford Mills Museum or check out Earth Restaurant & Bar for a delicious lunch in a relaxed setting.

These towns offer the perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and great food, and each one will give you a glimpse into Maine’s charm before you reach Portland.
