New England road trip early September 2025

My husband and I both active in our 50s have been trying to do this trip for a bit and it finally looks like we can get up there in this September after Labor Day.

We just got back from a week in the mountains in North Carolina, where we did quite a bit of hiking and while we like to hike, we’d like this trip to focus more on scenery, vibe, food, history (Newport mansions).

My flights are not booked yet, but planning on flying in and out of Boston … 11 nights….

Newport (2)

Cape Cod (2)

Camden (2)

Bar Harbor (2) - we were in Bar Harbor once on a cruise years ago and we didn’t make it up Cadillac Mountain.

Portland (2)

Boston (1) - been to Boston many times this would really just be to drive back the night before our flight

I know it’s ambitious, but we’d like to be able to cover a lot!

Id love feedback! Thanks!!

Your 11-night New England road trip in early September sounds wonderful and doable, though ambitious. Since your focus is scenery, vibe, food, and history rather than intense hiking, I’ve outlined a suggested approach and highlights for each stop along your route. Driving times are reasonable, but give yourself flexibility to linger in towns and enjoy meals and coastal drives.

Here’s a possible itinerary:

  • Newport, RI – 2 nights: Explore the Newport Mansions, walk the Cliff Walk for stunning ocean views, visit Bowen’s Wharf for shops and seafood. Optional: sail or harbor cruise.
  • Cape Cod, MA – 2 nights: Stay in Hyannis or Chatham. Enjoy scenic drives on Route 6A, visit Provincetown if time permits, explore beaches, lighthouses, and local seafood. Whale watching tours are also an option.
  • Camden, ME – 2 nights: Stay near town for easy walking access to shops and the harbor. Take a gentle hike in Camden Hills State Park for views over the bay. Optional: sail on a schooner in the harbor.
  • Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park, ME – 2 nights: Make sure to drive or hike up Cadillac Mountain for sunrise or sunset. Explore Ocean Path, Jordan Pond House for popovers, and take a scenic drive along Park Loop Road. Since you’ve visited Bar Harbor before, focus on highlights you missed previously.
  • Portland, ME – 2 nights: Explore Old Port’s cobblestone streets, local breweries, and seafood restaurants. Take a drive to Cape Elizabeth to see Portland Head Light and enjoy coastal scenery.
  • Boston, MA – 1 night: Stay near Logan Airport or downtown for convenience. Enjoy a stroll along the Freedom Trail or a quiet dinner at a neighborhood bistro.

Additional suggestions to enhance your trip:

  • Consider booking lodging early, especially in Bar Harbor and Cape Cod, since early September can still be busy.
  • Take advantage of local seafood, farm-to-table restaurants, and bakery treats in each town.
  • For scenic drives, Maine’s Route 1 from Camden to Bar Harbor and Massachusetts’ Route 6A on Cape Cod are highlights.
  • Give yourself buffer time each day; some scenic stops can take longer than anticipated because of parking or photo opportunities.

This itinerary balances activity and relaxation while covering your key destinations. It allows for scenic drives, historical sites, and coastal charm, with enough flexibility for food stops and short hikes without overexertion. It’s ambitious but manageable if you enjoy driving and like variety in each stop.
