Islands of Key West
Hi, we are stopping at Islamorada and Marathan. My question is are there any others that are interesting to stop at. We are not water sports people. More wildlife layed back people.
The Florida Keys offer a variety of islands beyond Islamorada and Marathon that are perfect for travelers looking for a more relaxed pace and wildlife experiences. Many of the smaller Keys are less commercialized and provide scenic stops, nature walks, and opportunities to see local birds, marine life, and unique landscapes.
Some interesting islands to consider stopping at along your drive to Key West include:
- Big Pine Key: Famous for the National Key Deer Refuge, where you can see the tiny Key deer in their natural habitat. The island is quiet and offers beautiful mangrove views and small trails for walking.
- Bahia Honda Key: Known for Bahia Honda State Park, which features one of the best beaches in the Keys, scenic viewpoints, and nature trails. A great spot for wildlife watching and relaxed strolls.
- Duck Key: Home to Hawks Cay Resort, but even if not staying there, the island is scenic and peaceful. You can enjoy calm views and perhaps spot dolphins in the bay area.
- Little Torch Key & Summerland Key: Small and tranquil islands with lovely roads to drive through, minimal crowds, and opportunities to see birds and small wildlife along the way.
If you’re more into nature and less into water sports, stopping at some of these islands allows you to enjoy the Keys’ laid-back atmosphere without needing to participate in boating, snorkeling, or diving. You can combine scenic drives with short hikes, picnic spots, or wildlife observation.
In summary, while Islamorada and Marathon are great stops, adding Big Pine Key and Bahia Honda Key in particular will give you a quieter, nature-focused experience. Driving slowly along the Overseas Highway and taking in the views from these smaller Keys is a perfect way to enjoy the region at a leisurely pace.
