When to arrive at the parks for Rope drop
hello,
Another questions from me sorry! we are going in September, staying in Cabana bay. we want to do early access/rope drop for both disney and universal parks. i know they open at 8/9/10 etc, but realistically when should we be aiming to get to security for to avoid the long ques just to get in?
we plan to uber/lyft to disney parks as no car, but we are going to walk to the universal parks rather than sue the buses as we do like a walk. getting up early isnt an issue for us, and we plan to ahve grab and go breakfasts so wont need to do that prior to going to the parks.
any tips appreciated!
Arriving early for rope drop at both Disney and Universal can make a big difference in your day, especially if you want to hit popular rides with minimal wait times. Since you’re staying at Cabana Bay, you have an advantage for Universal parks due to proximity and walking access.
For Disney Parks:
- Official park opening is usually between 8:00-10:00 AM depending on the park and day. For rope drop, most guests aim to arrive at least 45-60 minutes before the published opening time, but some die-hard fans arrive 90 minutes prior, especially for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios where early morning crowds can be high.
- Since you’re using Uber/Lyft, account for potential traffic and wait times for the ride. Arriving 60-75 minutes early at security is a safe bet in September, which is usually a lower crowd month.
- Make sure you have your park tickets and any required IDs ready to minimize delays at security and the turnstiles.
For Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure:
- Walking from Cabana Bay is a huge advantage. Even though you’re walking, aim to leave the hotel 30-40 minutes before park opening, giving you time to get through bag check and ticket scanning.
- Early entry perks for on-site guests may allow you to enter even earlier than the official opening, so check if you qualify and plan accordingly.
- For popular attractions like Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure or VelociCoaster, getting to the park at least 15-20 minutes before early entry can help you secure a shorter wait.
Additional tips:
- Grab-and-go breakfasts are perfect for early arrival days; you can eat while walking to the parks or in line if needed.
- Check the parks’ official apps the night before for any changes in opening times or early access policies.
- Bring water and small snacks, especially for September when it’s hot and humid.
- Have a plan for which rides or attractions you want to prioritize during rope drop to maximize your morning efficiency.
In summary, for Disney aim to be at security 60-75 minutes before the published opening, and for Universal, walking from Cabana Bay, leave about 30-40 minutes before opening. Being prepared and early will help you avoid the long lines at security and get on the top rides first.
