How to exit Union Station

I travel a lot to Union Station on Amtrak. Go back tot he station is easy. On Adams Street walk west past the Sears Tower and when I cross the bridge I use the station entrance at the Fifth Third Center. Really easy.

But when I arrive I can't find that route, and always wind up on Clinton or Canal Streets.

Any suggestions on how to exit at that same spot from the Great Hall?

When arriving at Union Station and looking to exit toward Adams Street near the Fifth Third Center (where you typically exit when heading to the station), it can be a bit tricky since there are multiple exits and pathways within the station. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you find your way out through the same spot you use when heading back to the station:

1. Arriving at Union Station: Once you're inside the Great Hall at Union Station, you’ll need to head towards the front of the station where the main doors and exits are located. This is typically near the Amtrak ticket counters and the Metra platforms. You’re aiming to find the exit near the Adams Street side of the station, where you can walk west past the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower).

2. Finding the Correct Exit: The easiest way to get to Adams Street from the Great Hall is to head toward the far end of the Great Hall (toward the main lobby, past the ticketing area). You’ll want to look for signs for the Adams Street Exit or the Fifth Third Center Exit (which is on Adams Street). This exit is located toward the western side of the station. It’s a little hidden because of the way the station is structured, but follow the signs that say “Adams Street” or “West” to get to the correct exit.

3. Navigating Within the Station: If you can’t find the exit directly, look for the escalators or stairs leading down to the concourse level. Once you're on that level, head toward the west side (towards the Fifth Third Center and Adams Street). This will take you out directly to the street, and you should be able to see the Willis Tower and cross the bridge to reach your destination.

4. Avoiding Canal or Clinton Streets: If you end up on Canal or Clinton streets, you’ve exited through a different route, possibly near the Metra platforms. Simply turn around and head toward the west end of the station (towards the Adams Street exit) and follow the signage back. If you’re on Clinton Street, you may have taken an exit near the Metra concourse. Just walk toward the west side, and you’ll find your way back to Adams Street.

  • Tip: Always look for the “Adams Street Exit” or “Fifth Third Center” exit signage when you're inside the Great Hall. These will lead you directly to the path you’re looking for.
  • Tip: If you’re unsure, ask one of the station staff to point you to the exit closest to Adams Street and Fifth Third Center.

Once you're familiar with the route, it should be a quick and easy exit, just like when you're heading back to the station!
