First timer

Hello, we are planning our first trip to Kauai. My husband and I are in our 60’s. We like scenic drives, some guided excursions, and bike riding, We are not snorkelers. To help us get started, which part of the island should we consider looking at for accommodations. We are thinking of March of 26.

For first-time visitors to Kauai, especially in your 60s and looking for a mix of scenic drives, guided excursions, and some light bike riding, choosing the right base can make a big difference. Since you’re visiting in late March, the weather is generally pleasant across the island, although the North Shore may still get some rain compared to the South Shore.

Here’s a breakdown of areas to consider for accommodations:

  • Poipu (South Shore): A sunny, popular area with beautiful beaches, golf courses, and resorts or condo-style lodging. It’s great for scenic drives along the South Shore and up to Waimea Canyon. The area is very walkable for dining and shopping, and you’ll find plenty of guided tour operators nearby. The beaches are swimmable and generally calm, which is perfect if you want to relax between excursions.
  • Princeville / Hanalei (North Shore): Lush and scenic, with dramatic coastlines and the charming town of Hanalei. This area is ideal for enjoying mountain and ocean views, waterfalls, and short drives. You can also rent bikes for leisurely rides around Hanalei. Keep in mind it may be a bit wetter than the South Shore, but the scenery is unparalleled. There are smaller inns, vacation rentals, and boutique accommodations here.
  • Lihue / Kapaa (East Side): Centralized location for exploring the island. Kapaa has a small-town feel with restaurants, shops, and beaches. Staying here provides relatively short drives to both North and South Shore attractions. Accommodation options range from condos to hotels, often with more moderate pricing compared to Poipu or Princeville.

Some general tips for planning your trip:

  • Rent a car—essential for exploring the island at your own pace and accessing scenic drives like Waimea Canyon or the Napali Coast lookout points.
  • Book guided excursions in advance for popular activities like boat tours of the Napali Coast or helicopter tours, especially in March when it starts to get busier.
  • Look for condos or vacation rentals if you prefer kitchen facilities, which is convenient for breakfasts or casual meals.
  • Consider splitting your stay between two locations (e.g., Poipu and Princeville) if you want to experience both the sunny South Shore and the lush North Shore without excessive daily driving.

Overall, for a first-time visit focusing on scenic drives, guided excursions, and light biking, Poipu offers convenience and sun, Princeville/Hanalei offers scenery and charm, and Kapaa offers central access and flexibility. Your choice depends on whether you prefer sun and easy amenities or dramatic scenery and a more tranquil environment.
